Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.

Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops

Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

500mL bottle, pours a clear dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of English malts, toffee, toasted nuts and some light bitterness from the hops - very English smelling. Flavour of toasted nuts, English malts, some dark fruity sweetness and toffee. Very smooth and warm palate, and very English tasting. A shitload better than the cask version I had last year. Quite enjoyable.

Sweet aroma, even sweeter when tasted, but can be overbearing after a while.

Clear brick red with a creamy tan head. Aroma is fruity, toast, light malts, a bit of sweetness. Medium, smooth bodied with just a bit of carbonation. Flavor is has a bit of dark fruits, bread, toast, sweet malty goodness, and a bit of earthy hops. Finish is sweet and round. Good brew, this one.

33 cl bottle at Ryds Herrgård. Clear, reddish amber with medium, off-white, long persisting head. Aroma of malt, figs, caramel, dark fruits, English hops. Quite vinous. Dry, medium bitter and quite malty. Medium bodied with OK carbonation. Nice one but a bit boring.

18/10/2011 50cl bottle @ Klaas' place - BB: 31/12/2011 (2011-559) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!

Clear ruby red beer, small off-white to yellowish creamy head, unstable, little adhesive. Aroma: very sweet fruity, peaches, apples and pears, some caramel. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity, surprisingly, peaches, dried plums, sweet mango, apple skin, very little bitter. Aftertaste: caramel, some citrus, toast, bit bready. Sometimes the English dó surprise me.
