Notes from 11/21/2008. A tulip of '05 during the VSK event at the Blind Tiger. Brown on black, black on brown, looking like a rich greasy glass of Colombian hot cocoa(minus the milk). A foamy, but airy hazelnut head billows out scents of savory smoke, burnt nuts, & a light oxidation for being trapped for three years. Taste was obviously savory, though a little less sausage, & more of the charcoal & burnt grease flavors(somewhat buttery) that make your mouth water right before the bbq is ready. A nice hint of lactose helped support an otherwise thin body. A bit of acrid & earthy bitterness on the finish was unexpected, but welcome. Maybe too much bark in the smoke? It worked, so I was fine with it. Never any good liquid steak around when you need it. A solid style. Hug your grill whenever you get the chance.

Tap @ the brewery. Poured onto small plastic cup (12oz?). Best part of this beer is the aroma, which at first is dominated by lots of chocolate while the smoke just hides in the background. As the beer warmed the smoke smell began to take over and before I knew it the chocolate was just a supporting member. The body, a weak example of anything resembling a porter, too light, I could almost taste the good old NYC tap water. No real taste coming through but an aftertaste or an essence of chocolate and smoked meat.

Deep black porter with a thin white head. Light chocolate aroma, not very smokey. In mouth, lactic notes reflected im a sweet smokey malt, and light bacon bits notes. Light bodied porter but I enjoyed it. On tap at the CNY Brewfest 2006.

Draught pint at Redbones on 11/13/05. Light chill haze to the beige-auburn-milk chocolate colored body, with a fair amount of greyish-beige head. Head has low retention, creating no lacing. Aroma has a touch of campfire, dry and lightly roasty. No malt sweetness found in the nose. Even after warming, the nose is faint and unexpressive. The flavor begins with a light smokiness. Dry and lightly bitter, with some touches of sourness. Nutty/grainy malts notes are dry, underrepresented. Becomes watery after a few sips and then just continues to grow even more so. Prickly carbonation, very little malt sweetness. Light acids, papery astringency and bland graininess all watered down heavily. Very little beer character, for that matter. Just a lonely smoke flavor hanging around by the edge of the water. No alcohol or hop apparency. Couldnt drink more than a few sips.

Tastes kind of like a thinner version of their organic porter - just a hint of smoke in the nose and flavor - slight chocolate and a touch of chicory - not bad.
