20th November 2009
2005 Bottle. Cloudy dark brown beer. Sour coca cola like nose. Crispy palate. When fridge cold the beer also tastes of sour coca cola. As it warms up a little oak comes through and the cola magically turns to malt with rich red wine notes. Finishes dry and lightly sour. The beer rewards patience.

Bottle Thanks to ditmier. Pours out a dark brown topped with a small off white head. Aroma was of berries, some pit fruit sweetness, light tart, and a touch of spice. Taste was much as the aroma but this a little oak and vanilla.

Bottle shared by Sean, thanks! Poured a hazy brownish amber with a light brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma was full of sweet grain with honey and caramel as well as a bit of underlying dry tart grape. Flavor had a more of a dry tart grape note with sweet grains and a hint of backing caramel.

Thanks to beastiefan2k for sharing - dark mahogany color - semi-sour aroma, with earthy, musty, almost musky character, light acidity, red wine and oak - mildly sour flavor, with grape and cherry skins (very tannic) - a wee bit wild, with a dryness that mixes with the tannins to almost make one forget that this is a beer and not a wine - there is a mild sweetness underneath, with hints of brown sugar and some toffee, but it never becomes strong enough to distract from the wonderful, red wine dryness - a wonderful beer.

12oz gift from Schroppfy, tank you vedy moch. I shared this with a few people, Kuhnhenn beers are perfect for sharing since a whole bottle would probably ruin any beers you want to drink afterwards. It pours a dark brown color with a small head. It smells like dark tea, sweat, and cheap wine with faint sourness (maybe just oak). I do not mean to make these characteristics sound negative, by sweat I mean more like musk. I would attribute that to the high alcohol and the oak. Taste is of dark wood and bark. Not sweet at all, a very untraditional Dubbel, no alcohol burn, and pretty easy to drink. Adds nicely to the palate, such a strong beer with no ill effects, smooth, below average carbonation. I liked it. I also had this on tap a year ago, I am thinking a different batch since I remember that being very different.

2007 bottle shared by artusory. Ruddy red-brown body, thin buff head. Big vinous nose, red grapes, sweet caramels, and light bitterness. Flavor of berries, sharp, vinous, tart and tangy. Some astringency in the woody finish. Tart, almost puckering. Barrel and grape flavors dominate, which hurts my rating.

Draught at EBF on 2/9/07
Thick-looking, opaque brown colored body has deep tan and violet tints, while the beige head quickly disappears in to the liquid, leaving only a film on the sides.
Fruitiness in the nose is somewhat matched by a pervasive, and rather dull yeast. Dry chocolate nips at the nose, while only faint banana and clove gets through from the yeast. Really red, boisterous and fruity is the barrel character, but it’s cut with yeast dullness as just mentioned, and it seems to dominate the beer. Light roastiness seems wetted down and even the pale malt sweetness seems heavy. No alcohol in the nose. Medium strength of aroma.
Very wet, slippery texture is heavily unfiltered and unfined. It definitely bogs down the palate quickly and the red fruitiness, dry chocolate and other medium/dark malts are left to try to escape from the undercarbonated, yeasty texture. Some light ash and spicy phenolics on the end further seem paradoxically pitted against each other. Just no brightness or cleanness and it dosent have the presentation of esters and light clove that the non-barrel version has. Grapey at times. Dosent even seem very recognizable as a dubbel. Messy.
