Tradition meets progress with this classic beer. The flavour of Liefmans Oud Bruin, dating back to 1679, is derived from special malts matured in open vats and matured for between four and eight months. The fermentation is then restarted by mixing older and younger beers together, leading to a more balanced and consistent flavour.

250ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours a generally clear deep brown, thin off-white head. Aroma is spicy cola, brown sugar, balsamic, dark dried berries. Taste continues along a similar theme, crisp with a tart sour edge, mellow fruits, some calvados, brown sugar, cola notes. Medium to low carbonation. Not a bad old bruin.

0.25 l bottle from ’Prik & Tik Baelus’, best before June 2017. Clear, deep brownish red with a thin, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, a bit fruity aroma of caramel, vinegar, red grapes and wood. Sweetish-sourish, slightly fruity taste of caramel, red grapes, cherries, wood and some vinegar, followed by a short, slightly woody-tart, a bit vinous finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Decent.
