Deep brown with rubious hilights- nice head. Smells of sweet caramels, vanilla, sweetness. Tastes the same. Deep flavors of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, toffee. Very sweet- maybe a bit too sweet- but damn good. DAMN GOOD.

2012-06-24, draught at Cockney Pub, Århus, 7.2% ABV, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Brown color, with small compact beige head. Light caramel and malt aroma, sweet, with notes of apple brandy and chestnut honey. The flavor is quite sweet, with malt and caramel, light fruity touch and low bitterness; good round mouthfeel. Sweet caramel final.
Probably judged too sweet by many, and not complex, but pleasant.

This beer has probably been the starter of my crazy beer adventure, 14 years ago; thanks Gaia!
Tan color; thin head. Strong aroma: malt, liquorice, tar, phenol, roasted malts. Good malt flavor, light liquorice, caramel, maybe too much phenol, still quite sweet in the front. Sweet final dominated by some caramel and a more hidden bitterness.

This one pourred a dark brew with a very small head. Veryb low carbonation with a nice roastiness/caramel taste. Medium body and well hidden alcohol taste. The only disapointment is the ending with a watery aftertaste that I did not enjoyed.

Pours a dark brown with lots of ruby tinges shining through. Small amount of greyish brown head. Slightly bubbly, no sediment. Smells moderately chocolatey, quite malty, some alcohol. Begins very very sweet. No acidity, moderate carbonation. Lots of caramel malt, with some light roasted barley malt. Hardly, if any, hops perceptible. Body is medium with some sticky maple syrup flavor. Flavor is good enough, but lacks complexity, I taste little else other than caramel, chocolate, and some barley and alcohol flavors. Still, alcohol well masked, but I could see this beer getting cloying if I tried to drink a couple. Finish dries out somewhat, but gets a little bitter and astringent.

A dark nutbrown beer with a fine but fast diappearing lightbrown head. The aroma is very sweet with no complexity. The flavor is malty sweet with notes of roasted malt but no bitterness. It is very strong and very sweet for a Schottish ale. Too sweet and simple for me.

Dark amber. Thick, rich and malty and flavourful strong Scottish ale. Perhaps not the most complex example of the style.

Rerating, as I've resampled and my experience better matches the consensus, so it seems I had a bad bottle last time. First note in aroma was a little chocolate and strong fruity malt, and a slight burn of alcohol. First sip - wow I can taste the alcohol. Its strong and malty, mainly caramel with some fruitiness, not any peated malt or smokiness that I could detect. Very smooth for a strong beer.

I guess this one got aliased backwards. D'oh! Anyway, I gave up on this stuff years ago but decided to re-visit it, just for Gusler. It starts off right - dark chestnut colour, richly malty aroma with peat, treacle, plums....but then it falls apart. The palate is overly sweet, one-dimensional, clearly too much corn used in this one, and then it gets watery. Watery palates and unbalanced sugariness just don't work for me. Sorry, Gus, it's just not for me.
