Mahogany burgundy ale with a thick off white head. Butterscotch and coffee aroma. Sweet malt with barley sugar, light hops, persisting. Thick and oily bodied, smooth and effervescent. A classic. Tasted 28/01/05 at Institut Scotch Ale tasting.

Thin fully diminishing tan head on a very dark amber body. Sweet malt and caramel aroma. Sweet dark malty flavor with noticable caramel and toffee and just a hint of smoke.

bottle - Pours very dark brown, medium head that mostly faded after about five minutes. Malty, alcohol aroma, flavor dominated by the malts. Palate is full bodied with light carbonation. The sweet and lightly bitter finish with significant alcohol notes hangs around for quite awhile. Pleasantly warming, though if I could change one thing I’d mask the alcohol just a little bit more.

Bottle. Syrupy malt aroma. Cola brown color with slight film of a head. Very sweet flavor - slightly burnt syrup primarily. A bit cloying. A nice beer but just not a style I greatly enjoy.

Pour is a very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is malty but pretty standard for the style. Flavor is malty, butterscotch and dark fruit. Pretty tasty but nothing reall stands out to put this one over the top.

(Bottle 33 cl) Version found in Sweden. Very dark brown, sweet and very malty. Lovely full body. A beer for long winter nights. 260801 (Bottle 25 cl) Version for John Martin in Belgium at 7,2% ABV. Pitch black stout-like appearance, brownish head. Very roasted - almost burned - malt. Sweet with a licorice-like sharp finish. Very full-bodied, but far from as refined as Belgian strong, dark ales. 6/3/5/3/12=2,9 311097

Pouring vigourously gave me a beautiful light brown head. Very thick. The aromas consisted of malt, fruit and caramel. The taste of molasses is very strong. Lighter notes of honey and sugar. A pretty sweet and heavy beer.

Bottled. Deep brown color. Taste is especially sweet, but with none of the smoke flavor or astringency one might expect this almost stoutish color. Even with a noticeable hop bill, it still runs a bit too sweet. This seems to be a beer that needs a little cellaring to mellow out.
