Geprobeerd bij de brouwerij met LiekevdV. Het is een licht troebel amberkleurig bier met een medium witte schuimkraag. De geur is wat zoetig. De smaak is moutig en wat zoet.

Oak aged version of Isid’Or made in 2009 for the brewery’s 125th anniversary; vintage bottle bought from a private collector in the Netherlands. Bottled in a 37.5 cl ’geuze’ bottle like the Quadrupel Oak Aged editions, with a plastic cork which was very hard to remove after 6+ years... Medium thick, off-white, moussy, very regular head, lightly lacing and retaining perfectly on the edges; misty copper colour with bronze hue, more chestnut brown and ’muddy’ with bits of dead yeast and proteins after adding the deposit. Quite rich and graciously aged aroma of Kirsch-soaked cherries, old madera, oaky tannins and a lot of wet wood (even strong ’old furniture’), dried banana, medium dry sherry, beef stock, caramel, gingerbread, bourbon, blue plum, vanilla, more elusive hints of ’Haagse hopjes’ somewhere, liquorish even, glue, medlar, fig, hazelnut oil, cinnamon, red curry, mushroom. Onset brings brown sugar, candied cherry and dito fig sweetness surrounded by a soft, ’generic’ sourishness effectively providing balance as well as a few light, very subtle, dried mushroom-like umami flavors; carbonation is soft but still tingling sufficiently to ’enlighten’ the sweet, caramelly, honeyish malt sweetness in the middle phase, acquiring softly bittering toasted aspects towards the end but nevertheless remaining primarily sweet, accentuated by the initial brown candi sugar sweetness which lingers without becoming cloying. Mouthfeel is smooth and rounded but perhaps a bit on the thin side. Malt sweet finish is further adorned with a drying, oaky woodiness releasing a lot of retronasal tannins, even something glue- or varnish-like; a trace of late, earthy, deeply buried hop bitterness is still there as well and provides additional drying effect, necessary to counter the basic caramel sweetness of the original beer. Alcohol remains limited to a mild sherry-like warmth in the back of the mouth, the sherry-like aspect of it being aided by light oxidation. I love heavily wood-aged beers and this one, not unlike the Quadrupel Oak Aged beers, pairs this drying, almost varnish-like, tannin-rich oakiness with the heavy, sticky caramel sweetness of the original beer and for me this combo usually works quite well. This one lacks some of the richness, thick texture and depth of the Quadrupel Oak Aged series but in any case offers something more interesting than the regular Isid’Or, which is in all correct, but a bit too straightforward and sweet to my personal taste. Glad I tasted this, it was neither easy nor cheap to score a bottle of it six-odd years after its release, but it has aged well and I sure enjoyed it.

Pours clear, dark amber. small white head. Smell is bit oxidized. Taste is oxidized, but not too bad. Got some oak notes left. some walnutty flavor. As typical for aged beers, this one feels light in the mouth, but releases a wide range of subtile aroma’s. sweet malts, but also some metallic tones ( in a good way ) as well as some dark fruityness. I think I might have enjoyed it less when fresh, knowing the la trappe beers, but i do enjoy this one as it is now.

Bottle bought at La Trappe years ago, small sample, served in a taster glass. Slight hazy amber color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, toffee, vanilla, slight oak wood, slight fruity. Soft sweet taste, caramel. Holds up remarkably well after a couple of years still. I had this one fresh before, and it was almost as good. Oak aging works great with the soft sweet base beer without making it too thin. Great example of how oak aging can improve a beer.

5th August 2014
Bright clear red - amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and semi dry with fine carbonation. Light dry creamy malt, whisper of caramel. Mild dried fruits. Light bubblegum ester. Light dry finish. Fine but something of a let down, was expecting much more.

Porzadne piwo. Moze mialo niewielka piane pachnialo niesamowicie. Melasa, zasuszonymi kwiatami, sliwka, kompotem z suszu. A w smaku jakby dominowal aromat drewna wilgotnego, spruchnialego. Podobalo mi sie i zwlaszcza te estry. Octowe lekko i wytrawne. Niewielka slodycz na poczatku, ale momentalnie piwo w smaku staje sie wytrawne jak wino. Arcy ciekawe piwo, moze smak zawdziecza lezakowaniu poniewaz nabylem to piwo jakies 4 lata temu. Jeden minus to gumowy, syntetyczny korek ktory ciezko wyciagnac. Do takiego piwa nie przystoji taki tandetny korek.
