Brewed since 1907, when the near-complete staff of the brewery went to see the circus of Buffalo Bill, leaving the boiling brewing kettle to the care of the youngest employee. This boy let the beer roast and caramelise on the bottom of the kettle, but after trying, everybody actually liked the "spoiled" beer, which became the brewery’s staple diet.

27th May 2012: bottle at ‘Willow Springs’, an American Way Station in Belgium (don’t ask!). Dark amber/brown body with a full head of off-white bubbles that tried to stay the distance and almost managed too. Roasted and toasted malts giving off a chocolate type aroma and taste, dark and bitter chocolate actually, surprisingly dry and un-sweet for the aroma and look it gives. Went well with my ‘Chilli Beans’, so I had another.

Tap at DHL during Paul’s pre-wedding weekend. Pours brown with a soft, beige foam head. Dark sugar, caramel and toast aroma. Medium sweet flavor, nicely balanced with some dark fruits, currants, toffee and candi sugar. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Toasty sugar finish, lightly sticky sweet with more dark candi sugar and also some mild licorice. Very nice beer. Has some intriguing characteristics.
