A pitch black beer with a thick brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of hops, which amonst other also leaves notes of grapefruit, but it also has notes of chocolate. The flavor is very sweet with notes of roasted malt, lots of hops, grapefruit, caramel, tar, and bitter chocolate, as well as slightly burnt notes. The end is very bitter, from a combination of the hops and the hard roasted malt. I think for a stout it would be just a bit better with a bit stronger roasted notes.

Bottle. Very hoppy aroma, grassy and piney. Very nice. Black colour, nice brown head which is quite stable. Very flavourful, again hoppy and piney. The aftertaste is roasted with some sweet liquorice, and well-balanced by malt bitterness. Low carbonation, but sufficient. This is a very nice beer, even though the hoppiness seems a bit out of style to me.

(On tap) Completely black and opaque with a creamy, light brown head. Fat aroma of lightly burned malt. Very solid body with lots of sweetish, hard roasted malt. Not overly hoppy. Very well made indeed. 281006

On tap at Horsens Beerfestival. Black, with a small, tan head. Lots of mocha in the aroma, as well as hops and citrus. Hops, mocha, coffee, pine, citrus and fruityness in the flavor. Full bodied beer that went very well with brownies. It certainly proves that Raasted knows what they are doing. Rating: 8-4-8-4-16-4. (061028)
Bottle. It looks really cute in the glass, pitch black body and a lasting finger-thick tan head. Looks more or less clear. Considering it also leaves lacings, what more could you ask for from an imperial stout when it comes to appearance. The nose is quite heavy on piney hops with a good dash of citrus. Adding a good deal of quite mellow malty aromas, it certainly deserves an 8, with it’s mocha, coffee, heavy roasted malt and chocolate. There’s also a little toffee in the far back. Flavorwise, it’s more agressive on the malts, not as mellow as the aroma, without being brutal. There’s a quite heavy roasted maltyness, with a good drop of coffee coming stronger towards the finish, as well as a little bit of dark, bitter chocolate. There’s hops too, off course. Piney, dusty, citrusy hops adding a nice bitterness and some floral notes. Quite sweet it is too, the beer, sticky in the mouth, with so much sugar the hops and alcohol can’t cope with it all, but it’s in a good way. Sure full-bodied, with lots of coffee-like and hoppy bitterness in the finish. There’s also sugary sweetness, coffee and chocolate, but it takes some time for those flavors to establish. Some heat from the 10% ABV can be detected, but I guess that’s only appropriate. A really lovely beer, sure deserving it’s score, and it’s surprisingly easy to drink as well. (080526)
