Amber golden color. Smokey, apples, dried apricots, Brie on a baggut. Beautiful lightly sticky mouth, lacking hops, really malty with a touch of sourness and smokiness. Rounded. Very drinkable for 9%.

First of two barleywines rated tonight. This one is double the price of the other though (Simple Malt Vin d’Orge). Notched bottom label indicating it was bottled on September 2009. Pours a beautiful clear and bright amber-orange with big bubble carbonation. The frothy off-white head is decent size, but goes down quicker than average, leaving some patchy lacing. Aromas of fruits (dark mostly with some oranges), sweet malt, brown sugar, toffee and smoke. Yes, they say this beer might contain "smoked herring". The carbonation balances itself out after a while. Soft textured and smooth mouthfeel. Just like the nose, the taste is pretty complex as well, but well-balanced, finding the same things. Grainy, fruity, with no alcohol burn, but burnt wood in the aftertaste. Kind of a nice mix between a rauchbier and a barleywine.

No aroma to speak of. Nice amber body, little head. Flavour is sweet malts and barley. Sweet finish. Nice as a barley wine, but lacking character.

12oz bottle at the DC Local tasting. Pours a transparent copper amber with a cloudy beige head. Aroma is smokey peat, caramel sugar. Flavor is smoke, wood, metal. Finish is full bodied with lasting smoke. Weird.

Bottle courtesy of Lenny at the DC local tasting. Dark copper color. Aroma of licorice. Taste has malt, caramel, and a slightly bitter finish. Pretty unremarkable.

bottle pours dark red with a thin white head. Smells like band-aids. Flavor is smoke from the front to back with lots of alcohol and little sweetness.

Bottle: Poured a medium amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with very thin notes of salt. Taste is not as complex as I had hoped with some caramel malt and not much help. The smoke notes that was supposed to be present is very hard to distinguish and the salty notes are also very hard to find. Body is about average with good carbonation with no alcohol appearance. Not bad but not worth the price tag.

Bouteille 341ml.

Medium, fine yellowish head over clear foxy-amber beer. Alcohol & very lightly phenolic-smoked; bit of caramel underneath. Phenolic, smoked, leathery taste, gradually building up. Important amount of restsugars, caramel. Retronasal flavours of sweetish young vegetables. No herring. Much more carbonated MF than the visual suggests; slick, not overly full-bodied. Nicely smoked; less aggressive than the Bamberg ones, but more carbolic/phenolic.
