A Belgian ’saison-style’ ale brewed with cocoa powder and chili pepper? Ay, Caramba! Score another first for the unpredictable brewery that was the first -- and so far the only - brewery to make ales out of dandelions and mushrooms, among other things.

*Old rating. Best before June 12. Typisch säuerlich und trotzdem weiches Fantôme-Bier. Die Schokolade und das Chili sind nicht ganz auszumachen, Gewürze, intensiv, süffig, rund. Lecker!

75cl Bottle from De Molen Beershop. Hazy golden colour, thick white head. Aroma is dry, pale malts, yeast, light floral, pineapple, tiny hint of cocoa. Flavour is light sweet, pineapple, candy, light cocoa, tiny hint of chili, dry malty, yeast, some lemon, dry bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Nice, resembles the regular saison a lot.

Bottle, 10C. Pale clear amber with an inch of fluffy white head that never disappears. Aroma of peaches, mild funk, orange peel, pepper and other spices (could be chile, wouldn’t have guessed). Moody rather than vibrant. Medium bodied, slightly slippery. Taste is much like the aroma with lots of mellow peach, some citrus, a little funky mystery (w a very slight sourness), quite spicy including more clearly chile at the end. Where it’s dry with little bitterness. Is that the chocolate there as a richness, smoothness and slight nuttiness? No idea. Just became more intriguing with each sip.

750ml bottle from Great Grog at the local Dad’s tasting. Pours surprisingly pale, thin white head. Green vegetables, light cocoa, pineapple on the aromas. Taste is light sweet, light spice, light sour too. Thin body, pleasant, if expensive.

750ml bottle. Hazy, opaque, orangey, deep golden colour with average, frothy, rapidly diminishing, off-white head. Slightly funky, yeasty aroma, citrusy hoppy overtones, a peculiar fruity, chili induced, orange note, a rather herbal touch that could stem from the cocoa. Taste is initially minimally tart, fruity, notes of orange, lemon, mandarine, some funky yeast, later some cocoa comes in, accompanied by a frowsty touch not clearly assignable to the cocoa or the otherwise cautious chili pepper; overall furry finish. Nice and well balanced chili support adds in positive way to a tangy mouthfeel predominantly based on fruit tartness; can’t see any benefit from the cocoa on the other hand.
