Admittedly, it’s a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history’s most famous agent of prohibition. But it’s a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox.

Deep Amber red color, with a fragrant malt aroma. Flavorful notes of rich caramelized malt and noble hop flavors harmonize on the palate leading to a crisp clean finish. Named after one of Cleveland’s most respected safety directors, who frequented the brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes still evident today.

Whole Foods, DC ($10): Pours a lovely amber color (very bright and fancy looking), with a ephemeral but also quite pleasant beige head. The aroma is the weakest part of the beer being mostly caramel malts and is not so noticeable when cold, but becomes more prominent as it warms up (as is of course the course of all aromas). The palate and the taste are the true champions of this beer and I dare say that they champion quite well. The beer in your mouth goes through a few successive stages beginning with a smooth and creamy feel and some malts and then hitting some slightly bitter hops and uncovering a yeast note and finally coming to the finish, which is indeed a splendid culmination. Kind of dray aftertaste after that. Very well-balanced and nothing bad about it.

A reddish amber vienna with a thin off white head. In aroma, light caramel malt with light fruity esters. A nice sweet nutty malt in mouth, with light hops, decent oily mouthfeel, not bad. On tap at brewpub Greene’s Ale House, Oswego, NY, Feb. 7 2010.

Refrigerated botte. Pours a deep amber red color. The taste is dominated by heavy earthy hops with some malt sweetness. Not a big fan of the style. This brew is certainly not a session beer.

This is a fantastic lager that can be purchased many places throughout Chicago in bottle form. Aroma is mostly malty, lightly roasted and a hint of caramel. Very easy to drink with a fantastic light malt aftertaste, but crisp at the same time.

Location: 12 oz bottle from jcos, 11/22/09

Aroma: The nose has lots of caramel, toffee, and sweet fruits, with notes of cereal/bread and earthy hops
Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a disappearing off-white head and light lace
Flavor: Flavor is medium-high sweetness, with a bit of earthy bitterness for balance
Palate: The body is light-medium, with some lively carbonation, and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overall, this is turns out to be a well-structured and tasty beer, maybe a drop too sweet for my palate, but very good none-the-less. One that works well as both a highly drinkable brew, and a nice example of its style. Truly a nice beer that, that you might say even borders on being "Untouchable" (sorry, I couldn't resist, it was just too easy...) No, it's not quite that good, but it is really solid, and I can't pass up an easy joke.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Wallingatan, Stockholm) Amber colour with brief, frothy, beige head. Malty, slightly fruity nose with caramel, toasted grain, apricots and orange peel. Malty taste with notes of toasty grain, caramel, a touch of orange and apricots. Turning into a bready finish with a mild, spicy bitterness and a touch of sweetness. Well balanced and tasty beer.

Bottled. Deep amber color with cherry tints. Big hop bitterness with medium to full Vienna malt flavor. Smooth and well rounded with a strong, hoppy finish. the malt is slightly over-run by the bitterness, but altogether an interesting, flavorful interpretation.

Bottle from Archer Liquor. Pours reddish copper with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel. Near medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is caramel and odd bits like nuts and stuff. Flavors aren’t weak. It’s not very bitter, and that’s how it finishes. Ok amber. Maybe better than ok, but more something would be better yet. Finishes more sweet than bitter, but it is rather smooth. If less than bitter is your thing, you will love this.
