Smoked Barleywine style ale aged in bourbon barrels

In February of 2017 we embarked on an adventurous journey from Athens, Ohio to Athens, Georgia with our friends at Creature Comforts. Not only do we share the same hometown name, we also share the spirit of collaboration and discovery through experience. In Athens, OH we brewed a smoked barleywine style ale inspired by the Adambeirs of Dortmunder, Germany. After a year of resting in Bourbon barrels, a beer rich in caramel, stone fruit, and light smoke notes emerged. Look for the Creature Comforts’ collaborative beer later this year, brewed in Athens, GA!

Bottle shared with Rich & Kenny. It pours clear deep reddish mahogany brown with a a decent khaki head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, big bourbon character, vanilla fudge, toffee, toasted coconut, cacao, damp oak, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, dull smoke, toasted brown sugars and tablet. The taste is slick, bitter - sweet, toothy, chewy, toothy, bourbon soaked drying oak, tannin, vanilla, toasted coconut, caramel, vanilla fudge, walnut, spice, warming alcohol and smoked malt with a drying, bourbon oak finish. Fulsome body and fine prickly carbonation. Has held very well. Fun stuff.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St E. Aroma has the figs and booze I'd expect with low smokey notes and molasses. Opaque dark cola brown. Frothy foamy light beige head. Fruity. Actually quite juicy. Nutty edge. Candy sugar. It's pushed aside at first but the smoke gradually makes its relaxed presence known. Thin - surprisingly so. Thin creamy body. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long astringent finish. A boozy burn. Enjoyable warming stuff. But, yeah, kinda Thin.

Bottle I started on my Saturday sess, but then fell asleep! Hazy amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Softish malts, a little toffee - caramel sweetness. Mild spice. Fruity bourbon, quite smooth and with a bare whisper of wood underneath. Mild spirit on the end, a little brandy like. Modest gum numb linger. Pretty pleasant overall.

Sample at Porch Growler. Clear dark mahogany-brown color with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. The aroma consists of bourbon, malt, fruit and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, caramel malt, ripe fruit and a bit of hops. The finish is sweet and boozy with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Good beer all around.
