Reintroduced two years ago by local maltster, Crisp Malt, five preserved Chevallier seeds were re-sown and crops harvested to create the volume required to replicate a traditional Greene King real ale from the 1800s. Vintage Fine Ale is a rich, flavoursome beer, enhanced by biscuity notes from Amber malt with a hint of caramel. Classic English late hopping varieties Fuggle, Bramling Cross and Goldings add soft fruits, floral and spicy notes to create this rich, complex and full-bodied Vintage Fine Ale.

Bright clear amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Smooth palate, decent fine carbonation. Silky malts, sweetish. Little malt cream. Mild caramel, much more toffee, slightly bitter. Ripe fruits sit easy alongside. Smooth finish finds a little sweeter fruits. A bare whisper of esters in the aftertaste. Well! Pretty good! A mellifluous malty marvel! Very drinkable.

The Guidford branch... sugary sweet aroma with a vinegar streak. Dark brown. A tad opaque. Frothy light beige head. Light bitter with sweetness at the periphery. Gains in bitterness, somewhat medicinal. Medium bodied. Slick and creamy. Average carbonation. Long and astringent finish. Had high hopes after its appearance and initial aroma but it's somewhat of a damp squib. It's OK. Possibly one of Go's better brewed but doesn't leave a great taste in my mouth.

Full pint bottle from Tesco Metro, Manchester. Deep golden with a frothy head as it's quite active out of the bottle. Interesting brew, which is malty, toasted, strength evident, notes of champagne, and bitter-sweet.

1 pint bottle from Tesco's, Amersham. A bright reddish amber pour with a tight butter-coloured head; pleasant biscuity malt aroma; then a big malty explosion in the mouth, some caramel biscuit, but also some really sharp fruit, merging together to give a plummy body; with a dry finish with lingering fruity biscuits and a spicy vinous warmth. Another excellent beer in this range - looking forward to more to follow.

Bottle at home picked up in Tesco. Nicely presented Pint bottle. A mid copper coloured pour with a fading greenish beige head. Aroma is semi sweet toffee, earthy nutty malts. Light soap on the nose later. Flavour is composed of layered malts, earthy toasted nutty malts, burnt sugars, tangy plum pud, little bark in the finish. Moderate alcohol warmth finishing. Little bruised apple in the finish. Palate is medium sweet, little chewy, prickly carbonation. Commendable stuff.

Bottle 56,8 cl. Pours a clear amber with a lacing, off-white head. That slight toilet cleansing detergent aroma I sometimes get from British yeasts. Rich, malty body, a hint of caramel, a whiff of mold - probably another yeast by-product. Fruity with a fairly solid bitterness. I doubt there's anything wrong at all, but these days I hardly drink old school British beers, so what is probably totally acceptable may seem messy and flawed - and very little to my liking. 120618
