Reintroduced two years ago by local maltster, Crisp Malt, five preserved Chevallier seeds were re-sown and crops harvested to create the volume required to replicate a traditional Greene King real ale from the 1800s. Vintage Fine Ale is a rich, flavoursome beer, enhanced by biscuity notes from Amber malt with a hint of caramel. Classic English late hopping varieties Fuggle, Bramling Cross and Goldings add soft fruits, floral and spicy notes to create this rich, complex and full-bodied Vintage Fine Ale.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Waitrose. Pours clear copper-gold with a frothy, off-white head. Malty and moderately sweet, with notes of toasted bread, caramel, low bitterness, British yeast. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet and bready on the finish, some toffee. Drinks fine.

Bottle from the now closed Waitrose in Oadby. Ruby and clear with a fairly large but uneven beige head. Vinous medicinal aroma, with some suggestions of stone fruit and white chocolate. Taste is bitter and crisp with a touch of malty sweetness before the bitter, dry finish. Some TCP in the aftertaste. Nicely carbonated. Not normally my sort of thing but this is a lovely well-attenuated beer.

18/3/2019. Bottle from my local Tesco. Pours clear deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, hops, bread, hint of chocolate, resin and light spiced fruit cake. Medium sweetness, light to moderate bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Finish is sweet, toffee, malty. Not bad. Like a weak barley wine.

Pint bottle from Englands own Tesco Supermarkets. Pours a clear amber, with a confident cream coloured collar. Sweet toffee malt on the nose. Taste is chevalier malt-lead with lots of burnt toffee with woody moments. Nice soft intertwined bitterness. Dare i say it this is a cracker.
