Christophe Clairville was born in a very modest New Orleans home in the Vieux Carré, the old French part of town. It didn’t take long before his family realized, that he was born with the kind of voice that could turn any hardcore atheist into believing that there may be a God after all. Without really wanting to, Christophe became the undisputed star of the youth choir in his local St. Mary’s Assumption Church. That boy could really sing. Christophe's voice was the kind that would attract attention anywhere. And although he certainly didn’t do anything to attract female interest, it came to him anyways. His natural good looks weren't exactly working against him either. Years later, during prohibition, when Christophe was the star of the Crescent City Lounge & Ballroom, it is said that he was the first male crooner to experience having female panties or knickers thrown at him on the stage. Even as a grown man that kind of behavior would make Christophe blush, a circumstance he never managed to hide. But his crimson cheeks just made him even more adorable in the eyes of his female admirers. From as far away as Chicago fans came to enjoy his show – a clientele mostly consisting of mobsters who could afford the expensive journey. Even Marianna Daddano, the wife of the undisputed Chicago godfather Dario Daddano, totally lost it when Christophe crooned his way straight into her heart.

Barleywine from this trusted Danish producer, bottle bought at Bierhalle Deconinck, shared with Goedele. Off-white, medium thick, mousy, slowly opening and dissolving head, initially clear pure warm orange-amber robe with beautiful coppery tinge, hazy with sediment. Aroma of orange peel, cognac, mandarin liqueur, marmalade, honey, caramel candy, vanilla, hints of candied raspberries, white chocolate, fig, white rum. Sweet, concentrated onset, candied fig, marmalade and yellow raisin aspects, softish carb, full oily and vinous body; caramelly and biscuity sweetish maltiness, soon warmed by Grand Marnier-like alcohol, bringing a peppery and hot effect to the finish. Some peppery hop bitterness as well as ground nuts, vanilla and white chocolate impressions vaguely linger. Very sleek, focused, near-English style barleywine, with the typical ‘modern’ twist of orange liqueur and marmalade; perfectly fine for me, but lacking perhaps a bit in depth and complexity, which may well arise with a bit of ageing on it.

Bottle, 0.50l. Aroma of caramel, toasted malt, dried fruit, syrup, wood and vanilla. Pours clear amber brown color with totally diminishing tan-like head, floating yeast particles and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with sweet caramel and toasted malt, follows by whiskey, wood, dried fruit, nuts and medicines, mouthfeel is spicy and warm alcoholic, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, sticky texture and lively carbonation in palate. Heavyweight champion...

Batch # 1538. 50 cl bottle poured into a Snifter. Lovely deep red colour with a thin lightly tanned head. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, ripe fruits, red berries, bourbon barrel, vanilla and pale malts. Taste is sweet. Full bodied with an oily texture. Slightly drying fruity finish with alcohol dense notes and lingering bourbon barrel. Port wine like flavour. Good, maybe a bit too sweet.

Bottle, huge thanks Papsoe! Murky reddish body, off white head. Creamy barrely-buttery-raisiny aroma. Strong caramel-oaky-buttery taste, oh so damn sweet. Slightly too sweet TBH but, all in all, better than the sum of its parts.

0.5 l bottle shared with Marko and Ogi, thanks Marko for bringing this one and Ogi for convincing Marko to bring it on the table. Hazy deep amber to ruby, small off-white head. Aroma is fine barrel, bourbon nicely present, cocoa, toast, caramel, candy. Alcohol emerges. Very nice bourbon or rum chocolate character appears. Flavour is huge dried fruit, figs and raisins soaked in bourbon or rum. Warming alcohol note. Malty quality. Spice. Alcohol present in this one. Not boozy but serious! Balanced sweetness. Medium body, moderate finish.
