Darkness – The Prince of Ales lives up to its name; black as midnight, this is a well balanced but complex chocolate stout. Deliciously smooth, made with English Goldings hops, Chocolate malt, Roasted Barley and rich dark molasses.
The rich bitter-chocolate taste of Darkness® is created using a complex mash of premium malts including Chocolate Malt, which derives its characteristic coffee/chocolate flavour and aroma from subtle roasting during the malting process.

16/4/2020. Bottle from Darts Farm, near Topsham, Devon. Pours very dark brown, with a ruby tint, and a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, milk chocolate, vanilla, toffee, nut and dried fruits. Moderate sweetness and light to moderate roasted bitterness. Slightly watery, average to soft carbonation. Nice milky cocoa finish. Liked this.

(Cask at Harp, Charing Cross, London, 29 July 2019) Dark brown colour, almost black, with brief beige head. Malty, roasted nose with dark fruit, coffee and prunes. Malty, roasted taste with notes of caramel, dark fruit, prunes, raisins, chocolate and a mild roasty bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Fairly fruity for a stout, but tasty and well balanced. Nice one.

Cask half-pint, gravity poured at the Old Fire House, Exeter on 11th Nov 2017. Flat and sadly in poor condition, dark with no head. Got the chocolate esters and flavours and coffee hints. Pity about it's looks and condition. Also had another half pint at the Shrewsbury Hotel on 31st May 2026.

Black beer, thin head. Malty aroma, touch of chocolate. Chocolate and malt in the aroma, really dry. A toasty, biscuity taste too. Dry, charcoaly aftertaste. It’s rich and distinctive but the toasty-ness is a bit much.

Half-pint, from cask by gravity at The Old Fire House. Deep black body, shiny black surface, minimal lacing. Aroma of roasted dark malts with a chocolate touch. Brown and black malty flavours with impact of dark bread and chocolate. Roasted bitter finish. Medium bodied. Smooth on the swallow. Likable (Exeter 28.09.2016)
