(bottle, 33cl) Clear, almost black coloured hue big and beige foamy head. Roasty malt-character with caramel, liquorice, hints of coffee and most of all fresh hoppy notes in the background. Roasty bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a mild carbonation. Roasty malty and subtle fruity taste with notes of liquorice and a present hops character. Lingering into the roasty bitter and moderately spicy finish. Not the complex malty Stout but with a fresh hops character. 19.XI.11

The taste is roasted malt, smoke, caramel, treacle, liquorice, coffee, charcoal and bitter chocolate, with a long dry-roasted finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Nice.

Re rate 05/03/14 - so much more roast and dark chocolate going on. Delicious. Previous rating 23/10/11 7+4+7+4+14 =3.6 33cl bottle. Pours opaque black but there is a red hue in the light. The nose has chocolate and earthiness. The taste has chocolate, liquorice, green chilli (but not spicy) and topsoil. The palate has a medium body, a creamy but dry middle texture and a bitter dry finish. Overall, itβs really interesting and drinkable.

330ml bottle from Sainsburys. Pitch black with a chestnut glint and a rapidly fading beige head; the aroma has demerara sugar and some coffee; the flavour has more coffee and molasses, the mouth feel is silky smooth and syrupy; the sweetness is nicely balanced by sharp resinous hops giving a dry, hoppy, finish. This is really good - Iβm looking forward to further brews in this series.

For a stout it has quite a fresh aroma with a hint of hop coming through. Flavour has a nice bitter, nutty maltiness a sweetness on the lips and a good hoppy finish. Thick, rich texture.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Black colour, tan head. Nose of roasted malts, liquorice, coffee, citrus. Flavour is roasted malts, coffee cream and liquorice upfront followed by a decent hop bitterness, resin and pine. Lots of flavours and well drinkable. Really well done.
