Definitely understated, but the advertised elements are all there. The nose is chocolate and malt. There is a thin light tan head on a black body. Taste elements include a mild oatmeal maltiness, chocolate and a touch of smoke. Certainly well balanced.

pour a dark brown, with no head to speak of. Aroma is salmon like, with some soy sauce, and some smoke, very odd aroma. Flavour is like smoked salmon. Wow, this is weird. It’s slightly wattery, mouthfeel is thin.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. Dark brown with no head. Aroma of mild to moderate smoked meat, wood, caramel, a bit of nuts and a bit of chocolate. Malty flavor, somewhat smoky, with some roastiness, chocolate, caramel, nuts and a slightly ashy finish. Medium-bodied, quite flat.

Canada: So, I had this right after I consumed a Black Creek Stout, and this was a whole lot better. Hence, it strikes me strange that this beer is rated so much lower. In any case, is pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is ligthly smoky with roasted malts. Taste is pretty generic and inoffensive. Easy to drink, although it is more or less forgetable.

Sample at the Strange Brew Tasting on 02/18/2012. The beer is a dark reddish-brown color with a medium thin creamy light beige head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of smoky malt and chocolate. Light body with flavors of sweet chocolate, peat and maybe some stale coffee. The finish is short with a semi-sweet smoked chocolate aftertaste. Slightly below average overall.

Okay brown body without too much density and not enough head. Very soft mud and barley aroma. Flavour is barley trending towards chocolate with a watery finish. This needs some work - I’ve had much better stouts. Sampled at 16c

Undeveloped. Has only the faintest note of smoked taste that the label markets. Too much carbonation. Aftertaste that almost feels salty on the tongue

Originally rated January 2010. OK. So I forgot I had this one in my cellar, and had never reviewed it. Sometimes though, Trafalgar brews are better to be left alone in the dark and with time might get better (if not infected from the get-go). Anyways, this one says best before Jan. 08... so, I am two years late (and I have one more bottle in my cellar.. ha, ha). Gives me a full English pint of mocha-coloured head that is creamy and stays quite a while. Had to lick some coming out of the bottle, and got that outdated sourness that beers have. I will let that alone for now. The brew is a dark brown colour with red highlights and hardly any carbonation. Roasted malt nose, with some coffee and notes of smoke. Kind of the same for the taste and with a thin mouthfeel. Hope to try some fresh one, one day and to be a little more bodied... and smoky.

Murky dark brown. Smells thin, with hints of char. Thin, slight roast and chocolate. Not much going on, certainly no smoke.
