Draught@Mikkeller in Stockholm. Hazy deep golden colour with a small white foamy head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is pear, some mild wooden tones as well as some floral, fruity, nectary and herbal tones to it. Flavour is nicely tart with some mild wood, herbs, earth, and funk as well as a wee bit pear like elements to it.

Fat på Fatcuz. Guldfärgad med nätt vit krona. Funk, fat, relativt låg syra, viss fruktighet från torrhumling men inte markant.

Hazy pale amber, with just a thin head. Has some acetic stuff, wood, mild tartness. Lactic also. The drop hop isn’t necessarily bright. It’s okay but I’d say not my favourite of the spontans.

One of these Mikkeller ‘lambics’ in the Spontan series, better referred to as ‘lambic style sour ales’ because they are not really spontaneously fermented, but in any case used for a seemingly endless string of experiments – including good old dry-hopping, which is what has been done here with Idaho 7 and Lemondrop. From tap at Mikkeller & Friends in wonderful Copenhagen. Open and thin, snow white, more or less stable ring of waferthin foam on a hazy peach blonde robe with ochre tinge, some sparkling here and there. Aroma of old wet wood, bergamot, matcha tea, very old and oxidized champagne, oloroso sherry, moldy lemons, tamarillo, damp hay, tomato concentrate, orange peel. Crisp, tart onset, sour grape and even lemon but not overly puckering; green gooseberry and halfripe persimmon impressions finely cut by ‘small-bubbled’ effervescence, evolving into a smooth, rather vinous middle with grainy and bread-crusty core under woody tannins and oxidized aspects (oloroso and tea again). Sour grape, dry sherry and bergamot grace the finish, the Idaho 7 adding dryness, spiciness and citrusiness – and I suspect this very herbal, bergamot- and tea-like retronasal aroma, which lingers for a long time, is equally caused by it, as I do not remember it from any of the more ‘pure’ Spontan beers I had back in the day. Vinous, dry-bitter, dried-fruity, woody and citrusy in a ‘dried citrus peel’ kind of way: altogether elegant, but the Idaho 7 could have brought more brightness and the tea-like herbal flavour became a bit much for me in the end. Does make me curious for other dry-hopped Spontans, though!

bottle from mikkeller webshop. Clear yellow, white head. subdued sour aroma, also quite hoppy, not agressively hoppy more hoppy like a lambic. flavor is sour beer, not that sour, but quite dry, if that makes any sense. there is a grassy hoppy herbal tea leaf balance to the sourness. decent lambic with what might seem to be a bit of sweetness from hops. Easy drinking lambic, but also slightly boring.
