A dry, bitter and spicy London IPA, brewed to a late 19th century recipe, with loads of English hops and two types of sugar. Hey was brewed for an exhibition by graphic artist Vaughan Oliver. Much of Vaughan's most iconic work was for the seminal 4AD record label and its roster of outstanding bands, this work was showcased at the exhibition. Hence Vaughan's design for the Hey label is adapted from the legendary Pixies album Doolittle.

Bottled. Hazy goldeny brown, with a mediumsized foamy head. Aroma is floral, grainy, herbal, some mild toffee. Flavour is sweet malts, toffee, some floral, nectar, mild wine gum sweetness as well as some slight yeasty/spiced tones. Not the cleanest, but actually rather tasty.

Hazy paleish gold beer, thin white head. Palate is light and semi dry with reasonable fine carbonation. Light dry pale malts. Smooth floral mid. Orange and orange peel hops, little lemon. Dry floral seltzer finish. A little dry but not bad at all.

Tap at the Shakespeare, Kelham Island, Sheffield. Poured a hazy light amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is light orange citrus. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a crisp woody hop bitter, light citrus palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle at home, 12/05/16. Hazed golden with a well appointed off white head that stays for the show - a good looker. Nose is light floral hop, melon, tangerine, caramel, straw, lemon jus. Taste comprises lemon tinged straw, orange, toasted bread, grain, airy malts. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close peppered with light hop bitterness. Ok ... not one I’d revisit but for a historical recreation not so bad.

Bottle from BottleDog, Kings X. It pours cloudy yellow gold with a thick, foamy white head. The aroma is earthy, grassy, soft stone fruit sweetness, apricot, white bread, cracker and spice. The taste is crisp, bitter, minerals, spice, cracker, toasted grain, soapy citrus, grass and some floral stuff with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Pretty unique mix of flavours. Quite decent.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, yellow-ish, bright golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Slightly unspecific, fruity hoppy aroma alludes to quince, mirabelle and exotic, less popular citrus fruit, maybe kumquat. Taste is bitter hoppy, slightly unspecific fruity, hints of quince, citrus fruit peel bitterness, unripe nectarine and mirabelle; bitterness is complemented by mint-like, peppery spiciness. IPA with unusual, maybe truly historic flavours.

A juicy but incredibly spicy IPA. Not sure about the spices as I don't recall old recipes with spices but clean and well made. Nice Mario

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Pours hazy yellow-gold with a frothy, pure white head. Interesting aroma - I think you get some grainy/earthy English hops, along with citrus fruits, ripe orange, tangerine, and crackery pale malts. Light to medium sweet flavour with ripening citrus fruits, some melon, rindy lemon, pale bread, light grass, husky grains. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly pithy and minerally on the finish, with notes of damp and musty hay, old lemon peel, grass. Somewhat novel.
