This So-Cal take on a traditional witbier honors Coronado’s main street, which is home to our brewpub and was once lined with orange trees. Bolstered by orange zest, coriander and orange blossom honey, it’s Belgium by way of Coronado. Expect a refreshing, light-bodied brew rife with citrus zing and a hint of earthy spice.

Draught at the Yard House, Honolulu, HI
Deep blond color, clean, with small creamy head. Light aroma, very light honey. Dry mouthfeel, lean; not much wheat, but at least there is a light lemony and orangey touch, light honey, very light chamomile; correct bitterness.
Simple but not bad.

Pours amber with a small white head.Nose shows bready malt, soft orange and faint honey. Very soft.Similar flavours of sweet light malt, honey with accompanying grainy notes and orange peel. No wheat showing.Seems watery.Doesn’t exactly hit the mark for a witbier...

From a 355ml bottle on 2/7/2012. Pours a murky golden with a thick medium head which disappears quickly. Has a strong flowery honeyish aroma with some fruit notes. The flavour is quite distinctive, with oodles of orange and orange peel, lots of honey, some spice, and a reasonably sharp citric hop bitterness. Not remotely like a Belgian style wit, but flavoursome and refreshing. Unusual and pretty damned good.

Hazy gold beer. Slightly soft palate, dry. Honey, bitter orange citrus. Turns creamy in the mouth. Finishes with wheaty malt and a mild citrus bitter aftertaste. Slightly off the beaten track!

Sample at 1808 Bistro. Pours a clear bright yellow-orange color with a medium thin and bubbly white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus and wheat. Light body with flavors of citrus, sweet yeast, wheat and malt. The finish is fruity with a sweet spiced aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

355ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a small head. Aroma is herby, coriander and sweet orange. Taste doesn’t have much to start but lots of coriander and orange on the finish.

355ml bottle. Pours golden orange with some very tiny bubbles and any potential head disappears immediately. The nose has oranges and cream with a herby note cutting across it. The taste has more of the big creamy orange note and while there is much less evidence of the coriander this time, it does fall away nicely into the orange cream again. The palate is medium bodied with a creamy texture in the middle and the end falls away quite elegantly. Overall, it didn’t start well, but it improved in every category thereafter. On the other hand, this is a style I find easy to enjoy, so perhaps not as discerning between the good and the great, but I enjoyed drinking it and wanted another.

Pour a cloudy straw color with white head. Aromas of orange peel, corriander and wheat. Moderately sweet and citrusy. Lots of orange peel and corriander. Light to medium body with lively carbonation. A decent witbier.
