This Original Mild has been continuously brewed in Hertford by six generations of McMullens for over 185 years. A balanced mixture of pale, crystal and chocolate malts form the basis of this 3.7% amber cask ale, with one variety of Kentish hops - Whitbread Goldings - adding bitterness and light aroma.

Cask. Medium brown with a thin head. Aroma is malty. Flavour is light malt, a little powdered chocolate on a dry light dark fruit finish.

Brownish body, very soft malt aroma, a taste that makes you go "meh". A very forgettable malty bitter.

Cask at George IV, Sawbridgeworth. Dark brown pour with a thin white head and bags of lace and bubbles. Nothing much in the aroma. There's loads in the flavour, but nothing particularly good. There's a hint of smokey bacon crisps! and a dreadfully unpleasant aftertaste. This is a beer that needs to be retired. It's disappointing to me that in 2012 some breweries are still producing beers like this.

Cask @ The The Nags Head, London. Almost clear, deep golden body with a small white head. Light aroma of malt and not much more. Flavor is sweet malty, some toast and a light grassy bitterness. Medium and average on body, aftertaste and everything else. Pretty average all together, but a drinkable session ale if the alternative is mainstream lager.

Cask, somewhere or other on Merseyside. A malty and watery bitter. Lacking any real character in all areas.Deeply tedious and forgettable stuff.
