It's not just the same hometown that unites Stone Brewing and Modern Times. It's an unceasing drive to create, innovate and challenge convention. (Not to mention the shared obsession with those little green miracles we call hops.) Modern Times / Stone WIzards & Gargoyles IPA is an achievement of collaborative awesomeness between two San Diego craft beer trailblazers. Centennial, Cashmere, Citra, and Azacca hops are joined by two in-development hops, yielding juicy notes of tropical citrus that play beautifully with the robust flavors and aromas of the coffee, supplied by, of course, Modern Times' caffeination masters. The result is a beer as wonderfully unique as its creators.

Orange with a frothy, white head. Tropical aroma, mostly citrus and papaya over a caramel base. No real sense of the coffee until the taste, which is bitter with roasted coffee grounds carrying the finish. Medium bodied, balanced carbonation. Never been a huge fan of coffee IPAs, but this one pulls it off.

Can, 0.473l. Hazy orange pour, huge frothy off-white head. Long lasting, excellent retention, nice lacing on the glass as it goes down. Fruity nose, citruses, tropicak fruits, zesty. Not picking up much of a coffee. Medium body, average carbonation. Refreshingly fizzy, soft mouthfeel and texture, easily drinkable. Fruity bittersweet taste. Lots of zesty notes in the aroma. Fruity, citruses and tropical fruits. Yeasty notes, grains, mild spiciness. Hints of caramel. Very mild latte notes in the background, a bit shame really, was hoping for stronger coffee presence. Medium lasting finish, fruity, slightly dry, lingering spiciness. Not much of a coffee but still nicely balanced and tasty IPA.

27/XII/20 - 44cl can from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: 3/6/21, canned: 3/6/20 (not sure if the dates are US format, or EU because it’s exported) (2020-1162)
Clear (can says it’s supposed to be hazy???) blond beer, big creamy off-white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of ripe tropical fruits, bit dank, mango, hoppy, quite some coffee. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lovely fruity start, lots of caramel, some strawberry jam, soft coffee notes, good bitterness. Aftertaste: bit malty, tropical fruits, some caramel, soft coffee notes, pretty bitter, fruity touch, grains, malty finish.

Hazy golden color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Coffee, hops and citrus in the nose. Medium body with flavors of piney hops, citrus and roast coffee. The finish is citrusy hops and coffee. Decent overall.

16oz 4-pack. Poured a hazy golden yellow color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was light coffee, light malty sweetness. Interesting mix of haze and coffee. Flavor was subdued coffee, and subdued hazy IPA juice. A touch more bitter than what you'd traditionally find in a hazy beer. Mellow mostly.
