It's not just the same hometown that unites Stone Brewing and Modern Times. It's an unceasing drive to create, innovate and challenge convention. (Not to mention the shared obsession with those little green miracles we call hops.) Modern Times / Stone WIzards & Gargoyles IPA is an achievement of collaborative awesomeness between two San Diego craft beer trailblazers. Centennial, Cashmere, Citra, and Azacca hops are joined by two in-development hops, yielding juicy notes of tropical citrus that play beautifully with the robust flavors and aromas of the coffee, supplied by, of course, Modern Times' caffeination masters. The result is a beer as wonderfully unique as its creators.

Hazy golden and copper coloured body with a decent, two centimetre tall fairly soapy tan head. Aroma of super deep brewed coffee (light roast) malt, nuts, earth, very rustic (dirty) qualities and some noticeable hop bitterness. Medium-bodied; Relatively rich malt characteristic at first which is surprisingly nice and supports the rest of the flavours, with a lot of coffee bitterness coming next with a slightly creamy, almost white chocolate note that is slightly rustic, but rescued by the large hop bitterness at the end which is both fairly pungent and enjoyable. Aftertaste is robust, very rich and bringing all of those flavours together very nicely with some light sweetness from lactose?, but the coffee and nutty flavours then come and provide great balance and there is a lot of residual hop bitterness at the end. Overall, the smell didn't convince me, but this is one of the frist coffee IPAs that I've actually enjoyed - despite me enjoying coffee and IPAs (separately)! Must be the Modern Times addition that made this worthwhile! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 12-September-2020 for US$3,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 06-November-2020.

On draught at Gaslight Social.
Pours a lightly hazy orange gold with almost no head of foam.
Smell is light coffee, some sweet malt, light hop bitterness.
Taste matches the smell. Pretty boring. Not enough coffee, the IPA elements are a mish mash.
Light body. Not much going on here.

473 ml can from Systembolaget poured into a Tulip. Celebrating today's events with an American beer! Hazy golden colour with a dense white head. Fruity aroma with citrus, coffee, peaches, slightly spiced. Taste is bitter. Medium bodied. Dry and bitter finish with citrus fruit and coffee. Nice IPA with well balanced coffee accents.

Can from Geers. Hazy yellow, stable, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of peach, tangerine, papaya, lime, sorbet, grapefruit juice, vague chicory when warming up. Taste has sweet peach, pineapple & mandarin, earthy touches of grapefruit & citrus peel, constant doughy maltiness. Zesty sour accent in the earthy hoppy finish, lingering grapefruit & mandarin with a vague coffee accent. Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation. Effectively a 'flavoured' IPA and nothing like, say, a cold brew. Decent.

16oz can from Hops and Bottles. Golden pour, light haze, fluffy head. Light coffee aroma, faint citrus. Taste picks up on the citrus notes with the coffee providing the bitterness. Coffee mild throughout.
