It's not just the same hometown that unites Stone Brewing and Modern Times. It's an unceasing drive to create, innovate and challenge convention. (Not to mention the shared obsession with those little green miracles we call hops.) Modern Times / Stone WIzards & Gargoyles IPA is an achievement of collaborative awesomeness between two San Diego craft beer trailblazers. Centennial, Cashmere, Citra, and Azacca hops are joined by two in-development hops, yielding juicy notes of tropical citrus that play beautifully with the robust flavors and aromas of the coffee, supplied by, of course, Modern Times' caffeination masters. The result is a beer as wonderfully unique as its creators.

Can. Hoppy aroma and taste, citrus fruit, coffee, light sweet and bitter. Medium body, hoppy fruity coffee bitter sweet finish. Ok, but without coffee would be much better.

Generally a fan of coffee IPAs, and I’m okay with this pint, but it seems a but discordant; juicy grapefruit and passion fruit notes are nice on their own, yet the clash a bit with the java, with the bitterness leaning more towards pine than roast. Again, not bad, but incongruous.

Can from 100 pív. Yummy and delicious. Bit high on alcohol, juicy, raw coffee beans. I like this one.

Soil nose. Hazy amber, medium head, good lace. Lemongrass and clay. Medium body, easy carbonation. Too muddled, not enough coffee, hops are dull.

16 oz from a four pack, from New York Pizza Dept. Aroma is floral, citrusy, light coffee, wet dog. Pours slightly hazy golden with a one+ finger bone-white head with excellent retention. Taste has a moderate to high pithy bitterness, finishing dry. The coffee note is less in your face here than in those coffee blonde ales, which surprised me; the citrusy hop notes show through quite a bit. Pretty weird stuff, but it tastes pretty good.
