This real North Country brown ale is all about malt flavours using hops only as a balance to the smooth roast nut character.

Draught@brewpub, Vancouver
Dark ruby-nut brown color, good creamy beige head. Aroma has butterscotch, nutty and caramelly notes. Medium-bodied. Smooth palate (nitro?). Nutty, caramelly flavor. Nutty finish with low bitterness. Well-brewed, pleasant although basic brown ale.

More like a clear copper with a full, creamy tan head. Nice malt on the nose. This is a nice brown (notwithstanding the color), with the sweetness of the malts being a little too cloying. Serviceable with a beef stew.

Draught at the brewpub, nitrokeg
Red-amber color with the classic nitro creamy head. Very light aroma, the flavor is better, with a balanced caramel, sweetness and bitterness, over a smooth mouthfeel of course. Not bad.

5-ounce glass, draught, savoured on February 5 2007; eye: reddish brown with clear caramel reflections, no effervescence, nice creamy beige head; nose: "defective" malt: it smells like malt dust, hops, grapefruit; mouth: hops is not as edgy as it should because of that "defective" malt, grapefruit, flat (keg at the end of his shelf life?), light caramel, finale in dusty malt with a hint of hops, medium body, slightly sweet, lightly bitter; overall: acridness all over the place that makes it difficult to appreciate FRANÇAIS Verre de 5 onces, en fût, savourée le 5 février 2007; oeil : brun rougeâtre avec des reflets caramel clair, pas d’effervescence, belle mousse beige crémeuse; nez : malt défectueux : on dirait de la poussière de malt, houblon, pamplemousse; bouche : houblon moins tranchant à cause de ce malt que je trouve « défectueux », pamplemousse, plate (fût à la fin de ces jours?), léger caramel, finale en malt poussiéreux avec une bonne présence de houblon, corps moyen, très légèrement sucrée, légèrement amère; en résumé : âcreté un peu partout qui la rend difficile à apprécier

On tap at Yaletown, Vancouver. Chestnut with lasting tan head. Malty creamy coffee aroma. Creamy coffee, toffee in mouth. It’s the beer equivalent of a latte made with camp coffee. Maybe a bit of diacetyl. Tough to call. Not entirely awful though.

Reddish dark chestnut colour. Slightly nutty aroma with a hint of chocolate and diacetyl. Soft and sweet with hints of molasses. Icing sugar thick body. Mega diacetyl...it’s all I can taste. Not an improvement over Frank’s.
