Not as common in Scotland as they are in England, the origins of porters lie in early 18th century London. These beers were made for the street and river porters in the city, hence their name. Affordable, flavoursome and warming, porter was a favourite beer style with these London workers for years. Ours, similar to this 18th century version, has been matured with oak which gives it its rich, rounded, authentic character.
Malt: I & G Ale Malt, Crystal Malt, Chocolate Malt & Wheat
Hops: Super Styrian & Whitbread Golding Variety
Maturation: Over whisky infused oak chips in our Oakerators®

330ml bottle. Almost black colour with dark ruby glimmer and average to huge, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Whisky-infused, dark malty aroma, hints of leather, oak, vanilla. Taste is sugary sweet dark malty, notes of leather, vanilla, oak, a warming touch of alcohol in the finish. Nice composition, but way too far on the sweet side.

Flasche (33 cl) vom Bierzwerg. - Tiefstes Kastanienbraun, klar.

330ml bottle. Pours a clear, chestnut brown with a reddish hue and a large, creamy, short lived, beige head that laces. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, ripe banana, dried fruit, vanilla and whisky. Sweet flavour of dried fruit, vanilla, caramel malt and buttery oak with a mildly dry, bitter, whisky finish. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Nice.

Brown bottle. Pours a clean, dark cola colour with a nice creamy-frothy beige head, good retention and lacing. Aromas of raisins, caramel and nice smokiness. After breathing for a while, big banana notes and hints of wood take over the darker fruits. The dark fruit (prunes) does stay in the flavours with a little metallic hop finish, adding some light dryness. Pretty sweet overall, so would be hard to drink a few of these. Great stronger porter though.

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, dark amber to brown colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Moderately roasted dark malty aroma with notes of caramel, bread crusts, alcohol-soaked raisins and oaky vanilla. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium to full bodied with a soft carbonation. Mildly roasted and caramelly malt character with notes of raisins, figs and vanilla; sweet malty and delicately bitter finish with present dried fruity notes and a touch of alcohol. 18.III.15

Bottle from Tesco. Pours dark brown, a bit thin-looking and translucent. Minimal head. Coffee and molasses sweetness. The whisky aroma is there but doesn’t knock you over the head. Taste is sweet but not overly so. Chocolate and caramel notes. The finish is surprisingly bitter, but this transition doesn’t really work for me. So marks off for that, but otherwise a surprisingly good beer.

330ml bottle from Tesco - Deep brown to black body, thick off white top. Nose is sweet, lots of caramel and vanilla toffee, hints of smokiness in there too. Taste is sweet, vanilla toffee again, warming boozy notes, good oily mouthfeel to this. Pretty much I&G by the numbers, and probably one I’d have again.

33cl bottle from Tesco, Reading. Cola coloured with no head; the aroma has vanilla and oak; sweet vanilla taste, with a smooth body with a hint of chocolate and a lot of alcohol, bringing lots of warmth; and a sweet vanilla finish.

Bottle from Tesco. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is light sweet malt, creamy caramel. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth, rich sweet caramel alcohol, light marzipan palate and a lingering alcohol bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
