Bottle from Beer Merchants. Cloudy light brown pour with a white head. Nuts, caramel, toffee, figs and raisin aromas. Toffee, caramel, butterscotch flavours. Sweet feel to it. Sweet, malty finish. Nice.

Bottle. Pours a dark, amber-orange with a medium, off-white head. Strong malt aroma, with notes of dark, ripe fruit and candy. Flavor is very sweet, with more dark fruit and malt notes, with light citrus and breadiness, then mild bitterness on the tail. Delicious. Medium to full bodied, with fizzy carbonation. The overall character of this beer is subtle, restrained, which is great to find in a Barley Wine. So often Barley Wines are over-the-top intense; here we have what I may consider the most sessionable Barley Wine I’ve ever had. Not that I’d session a Barley Wine but, you know, it’s good.

Excellent barleywine with hints of oak. This beer seems oddly underrated to me. It pours a rich amber with gold highlights and not too much head but good lacing. The aroma is mostly caramel malt with hints of brandy and mineral hops. The malt is rich and buttery and comes through even better on the tongue. This beer has three well-defined stages of flavor. The front is sweet with brandy, plums and bananas. The middle has an excellent malt flavor of buttered bread. The finish has a slight bit of mineral hops and a nicely dry oak flavor. The feel is somewhat sticky, but it’s not over the top for a barleywine and retains a very pleasant flavor throughout the mouth. This barleywine lives up to the "wine" portion of the style. It’s sweet, oaky and rich. I imagine it would only get better over time. It’s a shame it cost me eight bucks or I’d buy a bunch to age. Those mineral hops are definitely going to drop out in favor of a stronger brandy flavor.

11.2 ounce bottle from State Line Liquors. About one year old, assuming it was fresh when I bought it. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin wispy head that nearly immediately fades to nothing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, a bit of a buttery note and a bitter hoppy finish. The taste is caramel, toffee, nougat, citrus hops. Smooth, medium-full bodied. Tasty beer/

9th June 2008. Unusual barleywine in as much as it doesn’t wrestle you to teh ground. Low carbonation. Sweetish smooth malt. I felt like I was drinking a strong bock more than a barleywine. Very drinkable.

An old rating I found in a notebook, on tap at the Warehouse. Poured a thick looking dark orange with a thin near white head. Aroma was full of sweet barley and a bit of raspberry. Flavor is quite sweet with a bit of an alcohol at the end and malty notes throughout.

Dark orange beer with weak and white head. Aroma is weird but temptating and it reminds me from Fraoch Heather Alen, thus strongly berries, quite sweet and some alcohol. Flavour is simpler than aroma, malts, berries, pine needles, long and quite dry in the end. Very easy to drink and nicely slippery. Interesting, complex beer, that gives a lot for you.
