Aroma of roasted barley. Has a black body with little head. Flavour is good barley with hints of biscuit and shellfish. Okay finish. A good dark beer, but not too intense.

Clear deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and minerally crisp. Very mild and thin dark malts. Super mild coffee and tang. Modest dark fruits before a light crisp finish. Mild malty caramel linger. Very lightweight.

Bottle from Connolly’s Wines, Solihull. Poured a dark mahogany with a thin tan short-lived head. The aroma is of butter and malt. The flavour is medium bitter with liquorice, chocolate and a creamy, fruity, smooth palate. One of the nicest stouts I’ve tasted for sure. Well done Ludlow!

Hand pulled half pint at The Cock Hotel, Wellington Nov 2011: a well known real ale pub in Shropshire. Lovely dark body, almost jet black: on top a thin head of tan coloured foam, the head staying as it left lacing down the glass. Sweet chestnuts roasting over an open fire? Well almost, it did have a roasted nutlike aroma with some dark chocolate stirred in. The taste was a good blend of flavours, that dark chocolate again, some liquorice and malty molasses, all very slightly smoked. Not a sweet stout, but although it had a dry finish you wouldn’t call it a bitter stout either, an in between one then! Body could have been richer and deeper, but at 4.5% ABV it held its own, just. A pleasant night cap on the evening it was reviewed, not sure I’d have a session on it though.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 7/09/2011. Near black with a slight tan head. Dark chocolate and roasted malt aroma with a touch of fruit. Easy drinking, with more chocolate, liquorice and a dryish finish. Good.

Cask at the Seven Stars, Kidderminster. Pours near pitch black with a medium head. Aroma is is bitter, roast malt, with some coffee. The bitter coffee starts on the tongue and the finish is also very bitter, with some dark chocolate. It was a little watery, could do with a slightly fuller mouthfeel.
