Northern German Hefeweizen (formerly simply 'Königshof Weizen'), and a relative newcomer on the Hefeweizen scene, since the brewery was erected only in 2003, and though it was originally meant as a continuation of the 19th-century Rhenania brewery (which was closed and doomed to be torn apart), it never belonged to the 'traditional' Weissbier region in the south and launched its own Königshof brand only in 2008, beginning with beer styles more 'natural' to North Rhine-Westphalia (such as Alt and Pils). Let's see if this can stand comparison with its Bavarian forerunners... Very thick and rocky, egg-white, uneven, very thickly plaster-lacing, extremely stable head, remaining thick and dense for a long time over an initially only lightly hazed, pale golden blonde robe with ochre-ish 'old golden' tinge and very lively visible sparkling, turning cloudy and a bit deeper apricot-tinged only in the end. Aroma of halfripe and still largely green banana and banana peel, white bread dough, some light sourdough even, freshly cut grass, white soap, hint of dried lemon zest, plaster, young raw potatoes, green apple, raw celeriac perhaps, vague and volatile background hints of young abbey cheese, raw white cabbage (not in a DMS way though), sweat and clove. Very fizzy onset, numbing even, with a very strong sparkling water-like minerality to it, even a bit chalky underneath a rather restrained fruitiness of half-green banana, Granny Smith apple and Conference pear, remaining quite low in sweetness; rounded mouthfeel, lots of wheat sourishness and soapiness everywhere, but lacking a bit in bready sweetness of the barley part. Soapy-wheaty, sourish finish, chalky notes reviving, with that half-green banana aspect remaining and getting accompanied by faint touches of clove and chamomile, even very subtle cinnamon; grassy hop element in the finish, adding a bit of very mild and brief bitterishness but mostly aromatic, while that sheer wheatiness remains the dominant factor till the end. Even in these times of globalisation and hybridisation of beer styles, it apparently still holds true that northern German Weissbier tends to be drier, less outspoken, less spicy and more minerally than the original Weissbier in the south; this one meets that cliché, and even if it is very classically German in all its aspects (as well as technically well made), I miss a bit of finesse, spiciness and sweetness that I do get in Bavarian-brewed Hefeweizen. This one meets the basic criteria of the style, more so than most non-German-brewed examples and that is perhaps how it ought to be, but it does not live up to my expectations and remains just a tad too restrained, overcarbonated and straightforward to measure itself with the aces of original southern German Hefeweizen.

Wheaty, yeasty fruity aroma, notes of banana, a touch of clove, white pepper overtones. Taste is sweet-ish, wheaty, yeasty fruity, notes of banana, a touch of clove, a lemon dash lends some tartness. Zappy - not bad.

Bottle. Blonde. Banana and citrus in the aroma. Thin. Wheaty, milky flavor with soft citrus notes. Short aftertaste. The promise in the aroma isn’t fulfilled.

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle from 'EDEKA Preller' (Breckerfeld), best before October 2018. Hazy, straw yellow with a large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, rather yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity aroma of banana, cloves and some vanilla. Quite sweet, malty, rather yeasty-spicy and a bit fruity taste of banana, cloves, vanilla and wheat, followed by a short, moderately bitter, a little tart, fairly yeasty-spicy finish. Medium body, smooth and very effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Quite okay!
