330ml bottle from John’s Beer & Wine, St Ives. Shared with Simon & Mike. Pours deep black with a small tan head. Aroma is good, nice and roasted with a hint of chocolate. Taste presents a nice chunky porter, good robust flavours with bitter roast and chocolate. Not a lot of coffee coming through.

Cask at Craft Beer Co, Covent Garden on 21st December 2014. Almost black with tan ring-and-film and scant lacing. Intense roasty aroma with a rich coffee note. Roasty in-mouth with fruity berries and mild spices. Roastiness returns in a satisfying bitter and roasty finish. Medium body and smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle. Appearance- like dark coca cola, foamy beige head which slowly dissipates to leave a covering. Aroma- chocolate, malts, slight roast, cocoa, hoppy hints. Taste- smooth, chewy, roasty, lots of chocolate, milk chocolate, dry finish, coffee hints, medium to full mouthfeel. Very good.

On tap at the Southern. Appearance - opaque black with a nice crema heas. Nose - dark chocolate and coffee. Some creaminess. Taste - more of the same. Chocolate coming through more. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry refreshing finish. Overall - good example of the style.

330ml Bottle: BBD May 14, poured at home into a Gordons thistle shaped glass on 17th Nov 13. I love dark beers in this glass: it shows off the colours and head so well and it didn’t initially disappoint this time either. Very dark brown in body with a tanned head that sadly fell away a bit too swiftly for my liking. The aroma was ground coffee and roasted nuts with a malty molasses semi-sweet hint. Taste wise it was also leaning towards coffee, nuts and molasses: dark chocolate notes with raisins and vanilla also in the mix. Smooth yet with a mildly bitter finish, this is a lovely sipping beer and shouldn’t be rushed. I had some strong Cheddar, Celery Salt and plain Saltine biscuits with mine and they complimented each other beautifully.
