Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.
After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.
It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Not as complex as I was hoping for. The aroma leads one to expect a sweet barley wine. There is brown sugar, and just a little oak. Quite sweet with caramel and brown sugar; very mild hops, and alcohol, which is present in the aroma, flavor, and on the palate.

Sample from bottle at CBF 09. Deep red body, small head. Wine-like beer with lots of dried fruits and berries in aroma and taste with underlying sweet, dark malts. Bone dry ending with some impacts from the alcohol. Full bodied. In danger of being a bit too sweet (17.05.2009).

Overall Impression: Amber color, thin head, and a nice mouthfeel. Lots of strong, highly prevalent flavors that mix well together.

2008 bottle. Small, off-white head that quickly disappears. Clear, copper body. The aroma is malty with notes of caramel, sugar cookie, molasses, grain and a hint of resin. Some light fruitiness along with alcohol. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Moderately acidic throughout. Strong malt grain taste and an abundance of hop bitterness. Medium to full body with a sticky texture and lively carbonation. Seems a little rough around the edges (husky malts).

Unfair rating alert! Multiple vintages rated and averaged out. 2005 vintage 12oz bottle, drank 2-8-09. Pours a thick brown orange color. Relatively lifeless as far as carbonation goes at this point. Big dark fruit alcohol aroma, reminiscent of Sherry or Cognac. I’m not so sure I’d describe this as graceful aging. Maybe corked or on Carbon Dioxide, but this tastes heavily oxidized. A drain pour in most circles, this is way past it’s prime. A-2 A-3 F-5 P-1 O-8 2007 vintage, sampled 2-10-09. After the disappointing 2005, this one was ousted from the aging closet and into the fridge. Sweet aroma, with some in your face alcohol laced hops. Still maintains some carbonation, but shows a touch of aging. Malty and syrupy, I really don’t find this to be in the top tiers of Barleywine. Too sweet, there is nothing mellow about this beer. 2005 Bottle from Barley Wine, Copenhagen. Clear oragne/ruby with a vinous aroma, some peppery hop. It’s quite a well balanced, subdued, understated barley wine. Alcohol is well hidden. Some syrupy malts. Reminds me of Fullers Vintage ale. Good toffee and plum and rich fruit. Hops are peppery, white pepper, but balanced vs the malt.

2004 vintage bottle (Consumed oct-08) As the commercial description above reads it has aged well and this aged one is a lot more enjoyable than a fresh one.
