Bottle at home in London. Pours red-brown with a frothy, beige head. Some lacto notes in the nose and very modest roast. Lightly sweet flavor, lightly roasty, some dark sugar, faint dirt and minerals, mild cocoa. Light bodied with average carbonation. Lightly sweet to finish, slightly dry, with a bit of milk chocolate, baking cocoa, modest roasted malts, some burnt wood, light earth. Pretty bland overall, though not offensive.

500ml Bottle, best before 30 June 2012, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard some four months before that date. The beer didn’t want to give me a head, so mid pour I gave it a more rigorous angle, low and behold a tan coloured head rose through the body, sadly it soon fell to a wisp and collar. The body is really dark, almost black in fact. The smells were of lightly burnt chocolate malts and ground coffee, actually so was the taste. The burnt chocolate content gave the beer a dry finish and added to any hop bitterness that might have shown. Nothing too set this apart from other Stouts, medium body depth, becoming a little watery towards the end of each sip. Might be a whole lot better in cask form.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with medium off-white non-lasting head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee beans and roasted malt with hints of dough. Taste is balanced bitter and sweet. Body is watery to oily with light carbonation and a good long bitter finish with hints of caramel and coffee.

Bottle from tesco. Near black with hints of red and next to no head. Sweet, mailk chocolate and liquorice aroma with some caramel in the background. Easy drinking, with more chocolate, some raisins and milky coffee, leading to a slightly dry finish. Good.

Bottle from Tesco (Original Stout)
Black, very thin ruby edge on glass, tan frothy head that dissipates almost to nothing.
Aroma of roasted malt, a lot of coffee, some dark bitter chocolate.
Taste of heavily roasted malts, burnt bread crust, bit of smoky wood, earthy hops. Fairly complex.
Very dry, roasted finish with earthy hops. Thin to medium body, average carb.
A lot of flavour for the abv but a bit thin, relying on mainly burnt notes and earthy hop. I prefer stouts that are richer with more body and abv. But it is quite a good beer. I doubt, though, it will become a ’classic’ stout.

Bottle from Tesco Extra, Bridgend, Wales shared with Gazza and dad consumed 01.09.1. This was labelled as Brains Original Stout Pours black with filmy off-white head. This is quite soft in the mouth, easy drinking beer, some caramel (picked out by Gazza) but there is a smooth watery milk chocolate. Its absolutely fine. We used the rest to make onion gravy I think it worked quite well. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

50cl bottle of Brains Original Stout from Tescos, Hastings. A deep chestnut black colour with a loose creamy beige head; rich coffee and chocolate aroma; the texture is milky, but the taste is quite strongly bitter and lacking the expected sweetness; there’s some chocolate then a long dry finish with burnt demerara sugar and a slight warming at the end. A fine stout.
