Brett IPA fermentée en barrique de Pomerol. 6,8%

Riktigt gott.

“Brett IPA” – a concept that more often than not works well for me – from l’Ermitage in Brussels; came up very strongly when I lifted one edge of the crown cap and had I pulled further, it would certainly have gushed magnificently – so I let it rest for half an hour before opening it and had no gushing issues whatsoever. Thick, frothy, very mousy, egg-white, rather irregularly edged head on a cloudy apricot blonde beer with ochre-ish tinge, turning into an opaque beige with sediment. Aroma of very outspoken Brettanomyces ‘horseblanket’, stale urine even, old cheese rind, bread crust, pickled lemons, moldy oranges, soaking wet old wood, passionfruit, overripe melon, very dry white wine, papaja, sour cream, tamarillo, sweat. Very estery onset, juicy with overripe stonefruit, passionfruit and mildly sourish lime effects, hint of pickled lemons at the edges, very actively carbonated but not in a harshly stinging way, fluffy body; lovely bready maltiness, turning sourdoughy in combination with that sour streak (likely coming from an additional and semi-intentional lactic-bacterial infection); ends yeasty and bready, showing off its IPA nature by a wave of tropical-fruity, NEIPA-like hoppiness (passionfruit, tamarillo, citrus) intensely intertwining with the funky Brett effects into moldy citrus fruit and pickled exotic fruit effects. The Brett takes the upper hand eventually and the beer finishes bone dry, even powdery, but wine effects from the barrels remain virtually unnoticeable. Hazy IPA (‘NEIPA’ if you will) having received the old Brett treatment – not even sure if I had a ‘Brett NEIPA’ before, now that I come to think of it; Brett tends to hit a weak spot with me so I liked this one very much, especially because it managed to maintain the colourful citric and tropical aromas from the hops. So far at least, because these are delicate in nature to begin with and Brett eats everything, of course… --- Beer merged from original tick of L'Ermitage Athanor on 10 Mar 2021 at 10:44 - Score: Appearance - 4 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 9. BB 09/11/2021, 330ml bottle purchased at La Cave à Bières d'Etre Gourmet online shop; Pomerol (red wine from Pomerol region, France) barrel fermented Brett IPA;

APPEARANCE: hazy, white peach like color, with the sediment more pineapple juice like presence; some degree of visibility under the light, off white head, lasting small layer on the top of the beer, decent lacing when rocking the glass

AROMA: typical Brett aromas but not in offensive or dirty way, more fruit forward and juicy than funky; light bready malt backbone, citrus zest, very soft citrus freshness, notes of fermenting grapes, hints of sweet tea, spoiled/rotten onions, subtle vegetable broth, hay and green notes on the edges; no obvious red wine barrel on the nose

TASTE: moderate carbonation with fine bubbles, medium light to medium body, slightly slick & juicy mouthfeel, quite mineral and savory; fairly fruity onset backed up by soft wine and citrus tartness; fruit candy, grape and lemon juice, subtle vibe of stone fruits; gentle Brett character - hints of musty cellar, dust, leather and faint hints of man's toilet, moderate dry finish with light herbal like and piney bitterness, mild resin, not tannic or woody; with sediment slightly sweeter and juicier also some bready sweetness

OVERALL: hazy IPA with nice juicy character and a touch of wine barrel and more than well behaved Brett; easy drinkable, juicy, refreshing and crushable

Slight hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma of Brett, barnyard funk and manure with bright fresh citrus and fruits hiding behind the animal poop onslaught. Flavour is light moderate sweet and moderate bitter with a light sour edge. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Not really my thing.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 09/11/2021.
