The Bothy Code decrees that one should break bread and share whisky around the fire with fellow visitors. In that spirit, we made this, an imperial scotch ale aged in single malt casks from speyside courtesy of the scotch malt whisky society. Everything about this year’s vintage is exactly how it should be with hints of caramel, fruitcake and the lingering hum of the finest whisky. Time to raise a can to the wilds of Scotland and the art of barrel-ageing.

Hops: Columbus
Malts: Golden Promise, Vienna, Rye Crystal

330 ml can. Pours a dark brown with lots of initial carbonation but little head. Aroma of dry caramel, oaky smoky whisky, raisins, and lots of toasted malts. Flavors follow same bringing out more of the whiskey (just right on the smoky, without overkill) and sugary raisins. Definite booze and heat on the finish but not too distracting. A sipper...

Can. Dark amber-brown. No head. Rich bourbon aroma, lots of toffee malts, wood and vanilla. Complex on the palate - some burnt notes - ashes and char, and those come up against fairly rich malt sugars, deeply caramelized. The barrel again has quite a bit of influence, but the overt vanilla/bourbon character is less on the palate. Comes in with a boozy finish. Now at this point the char seems less like happy smokiness and way more like ashtray, so I'm kind of bummed about that. Still pretty good beer, but it does feel like they've left something on the table here.

330mL can, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a tiny beige head. Aroma is loaded with smokey whiskey barrels, revealing those Speyside barrels nicely -- there's some toasted malt in back, but the barrels dominate the nose. Flavour is loaded with smokey whiskey barrels that dominate. There's some sweet caramel and roast to provide a foundation, but the smokey whiskey once again dominates. The complexity isn't as deep as it could be, but I do love the whiskey character.

Can. Deep dark brown color. Whisky in the aroma. Malty sweet, caramelly flavor with lots of whisky and enough body to support the barrel aging. Slightly alcoholic but well balanced. Great!
