The Bothy Code decrees that one should break bread and share whisky around the fire with fellow visitors. In that spirit, we made this, an imperial scotch ale aged in single malt casks from speyside courtesy of the scotch malt whisky society. Everything about this year’s vintage is exactly how it should be with hints of caramel, fruitcake and the lingering hum of the finest whisky. Time to raise a can to the wilds of Scotland and the art of barrel-ageing.

No head on a dark brown greasy.body. Oak, whisky & Christmas cake aroma. Medium to full bodied, soft smooth & oily. Smoked, peaty, Christmas cake & whisky tastes with a big boozy finish. That's a big beer

Can from Gedeelde Vreugde. Cloudy dark brown to black, quickly thinning, tan head. Strong aroma of burnt caramel, dark fudge, date, fig, sweet whisky, biscuit, molasses, pear, mocha. Taste has very sweet date, pear & raisin surrounding a thick malty core of molasses, biscuit and caramel, bit toasty, very slightly nutty with an early alcohol warmth. Herbal hoppy finish, lingering dried fruit, wood, hard caramel and heating sweet whisky alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Very satisfying Scotch with the whisky barrel fitting in perfectly, adding structure and depth. Lovely!

330ml can from Tempest Brewery. Extremely dark complexion, super deep brown head. Aroma presents expected speyside notes, alongside rich dark chocolate. Taste continues in a similar fashion, somewhat light bodied but velvety smooth with great depth of flavours, lots of smooth caramel and chocolate with burnt brown sugars, vanilla and an oaky warmth. Lovely sipper.

Can shared with my dad. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, ruby red in the light. Small head. Aroma is very rich, caramel, prune, fig, dark malts, chocolate, whisky, light peat. Big body, very smooth. Flavour is very rich, sweet, malty with lots of dark malt complexity. Chocolate, fudge, caramel, prune, fig, vanilla, brown sugar, molasses. Big whisky, light peat, boozy finish. Finish is long, sweet and lightly peated whisky.

Opaque dark beer, thick light tan head. Smells malty, boozy and with some dried fruit. Flavour has the whisky, toasty malt, dried fruit, a dash of caramel, some anise. Strong, warm, rich, very tasty. Quite boozy but it doesn't always do to be TOO drinkable at this strength!

Canned, 330 ml at Ambasada. Dark brown with off white head. Lots of alcohol in aroma, caramel, some chocolate, bit roasty, some fruity notes, sweet, thin for what it is. Low carbonation.

Can from Cork & Cask. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aromas of rum and raisin, Jamaican ginger cake, whisky, wood. Taste is caramel, whisky, vanilla, ground mixed spice and mixed peel. Complex and interesting. As our kid would say, there's a lot going on.

330ml on Alex's porch. Appearance: a bit muddy brown with a beige head. Aroma: dark fruits, some smoke, figs, plums, raisins, boozy, bourbon. Taste: along the same lines, some weird fruity notes, strong earthy notes. Overall: very weird, harsh, not really enjoyable, preferred do not even finish my half of the can.

Deep dark brown. Woody and light smoky, ashy, malts. Smoky, woody, ashy and very Laphroaig like but not as strong. Definitely peaty, but sweetness and body to balance.
