Dessert please! We are going for a Mexican Cake today. This Pastry Stout has aromas of chocolate, vanilla and mocha. The beer is full and sweet and you can taste chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, mocha and caramel. We finish gently bitter with a light spiciness. You can't refuse this dessert, can you ?!
Name
We take you back to the Middle Ages. Many craftsmen were members of a guild, an association of people who exercised the same profession. To become a member, craftsmen made a masterpiece as a proof of competence. This work was assessed on the basis of skills, technique and creativity. In honor of Sint Maarten, the patron saint of the Haarlem brewers' guild, we brew a Masterpiece every year. Jopen's birthday is on St. March Wednesday (11/11) and we celebrate that this year with Pastry Stout. The taste is reminiscent of a dessert or pastry.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Aroma is dark malt, roast, some Jopen liquorice and spicy notes, sugar, burnt caramel. Sweet flavour, moderate bitter. Body a little above medium. As (Mexicake) Stouts go, this is so-so.

Bottle shared at BBT 05/2023. Surprisingly med-thin body, med-high carbonation. Med-high sweetness, also med-high bitterness and light alcoholic warmth, compounded by light chilli heat - together slightly sharp, but not too much. Mostly malty, moderately chocolatey, moderately coffeeish, med-light dried fruits. The special ingredients rather hidden, providing only subtle hints. Overall good, but not great.

Shared bottle at BBT May 2023. Dark brown color with small medium beige head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, caramel. Taste is sweet, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, caramel.Chilli by warming. Body could be stronger, otherwise good.

Dark brown color with low beige head. Aroma: sweet, lactose, milk chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon. Taste: creamy, silky, milk chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, bit watery Medium body, moderate carbonation, moderate bitterness. Good but not great.

Tap at Jopenkerk. Black. Fudge, lots of dark sugar, soft milk chocolate, a hint of spices. Mostly a sweet boozy imperial stout, not so much Mexican but it’s alright.

Glas gedronken van tap tijdens bierfestival Rozendaal. Doep donkerbruin tot zwart bier met beige schuimkraag. Aroma van anijs. Smaak van drop en anijs. Nasmaak is plakkerig en snoepachtig.

Bottle shared, black beer, small to no head. Aroma is roast, malt, chocolate, sweet. Taste is the same, pepper, chilli burn, chocolate, roast, malt. Not bad

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with moderate tannish head. Aromas of dull chocolate, roasted malts and dark fruit. Flavors of dry chocolate, copper, roasted peppers, dark fruit and roasted malts. Kinda like a Belgian version of a Mexicake

75cl Fles van Vomar. Zwart, beige kraag. Zoet, wat kruiden, geroosterde mout, chocolade, het Mexicake gevoel komt in het geheel niet door voor mij. Oké maar had hier meer van verwacht.

Bottle from Geers. Hazy black, small, foamy, tan head. Aroma of brownie dough, chocolate nibs, vanilla cream, cinnamon, black pepper, raisin. Taste has sweet raisin & fig in a thick chocolatey & brownie-like malt body, spicy accents in the back as well as a dash of vanilla cream. Peppery hoppy finish, slightly toasty, indeed some chili, yet biscuit & chocolate still manage to enhance the sweetness of it before warming coffee liqueur alcohol kicks in. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Jopen chasing Moersleutel? Nice try but I miss some more layers.
