Oh My Kolsch! This is a Cologne style ale with a heart of darkness. Don't be fooled, this has all the crisp, delicate, refreshing trademarks of a cold-fermented Kolsch, with a twist of dark malt and the dark arts.

20/11/2020. Bottle sample courtesy of the SHIG. Pours almost black with a creamy/frothy beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malt, liquorice, touch of coffee, ash and blackcurrant. 330ml bottle, via Beer52; BB Oct 2020. Poured (twice) into an old Gaffel glass at home on 7th feb 2020. Well, as the name suggests it's black, the head a full tanned affair. Aroma has some coffee notes, as does the taste, actually it's OK. I worried about the idea of a boring style of beer being 'blacked' but it was fine in this instance. Let's leave it at that.

Rocky tan head left a creamy cover on a still black body. Malt, coal & berry aroma. Medium bodied, sharp on the front with thicker cloying back. Roasted, nutty, malt, bitter, cream & berry tastes. Deece.

Beer 52. Bottle. Roasty aroma with a light perfumed streak. Dark and glossy. Foamy beige head. Light sour - dark berries - with hints of sweetness. Gradually takes on a creamy coffee bitterness. The sourness and sweetness remain throughout and reassert themselves into the finish. Light-medium bodied. Creamy. Flat-average carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Is it really a Kölsch? I dunno but it goes down well.

[33cl bottle from Beer52.] A glossy black pour with a thick cream coloured head; yeasty aroma; smooth in the mouth with some licorice to start, then well toasted malts and an oaty body; the finish has some really bitter burnt grains. A pleasant dark lager.

Black beer. Thin head. Hoppy malt aroma. Like a black IPA stile lager this. Crisp hoppiness balanced with toasty malt and a lasting, zesty finish. Crisp and refreshing when chilled and balanced very nicely.
