Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan!

I was quite happy to find this one at the LCBO (as it is a different one which our country is not strong on stuff like that - but I love). Pours a clean amber colour with a beige head that is frothy, last a real long time and creates good thick foamy lacing. I cannot smell the chipotle, but a light malty aroma with notes of nuts and bread. The taste though is quite special. The chipotle is a bit more present, but still not overpowering. A real nice burnt flavour comes up. Mild lingering, and quite refreshing overall with decent malt and caramel in the aftertaste. A nice different brew that is worth trying, and not as powerful as most people would be scared of the pepper itself.

Bottle @ home. Hazy, burnt orange appearance with an ivory head. Moderately peppery, spicy, somewhat smoky, light pale malty nose. Fairly peppery, mildly spicy, quite vegetal, light malty flavor. Too much veggie for me.

on tap-pours a light tan head that laces and amber color. Aroma is chipotle/peat, some roasty. Taste is plenty of chipotle/peat/roasty-medium malt, some spice hops. Nice chipotle up front, not a lot at finish.

Okay. Hmmmm. Hoo boy. Okay. Were I one who found the style of pepper beer enjoyable, I would admire this beer’s appearance, respect the odor of chipotle wafting up from the pint, and note its marked pepper character. I’m not one, so this beer kinda tastes like the way burning electrical wires smell. (7/08)

On tap at the Rogue Public House in San Francisco. Pours with a clear copper-orange hued body with a medium sized just off-white head that leaves good lace. Aromas are earthy, dirty, spicy, light chocolate, some vegital, dirt, smoke and spice. Flavors are of caramel, toffee, ready, lightly earthy, smokey chipotle, and a touch of heat. Light notes of metal. Some spicy heat, medium bubbles, dry and finishes a bit metallic.

Tap @ Cheeky Monk, Denver doing the oyster event. Pours golden with a big white head. Aroma is rather weak, but some lightly roasted malt, light smoke spice. Taste is malts, smoke, light notes of oak / wood, chillies, peppers. Medium body, soft carbonation, dry finish. Special beer, but rather simple. 130411
