Bottle. Pours a jet black body with a minimal beige head on top. Burnt, coffeeish aroma with some licorice and a faint hoppy note. Burnt, coffeeish flavor too, with a hoppy bitterness slighlty more pronounced than in the aroma, as well as a coffee-ish bitterness. Medium body and a burnt, coffee-like finish. I would like it a bit more fruity, even though itโs not as coffee-ish as it might seem from my notes. For a 4.5% beer though, itโs very nice. (071027)

(Cask at Pembury Tavern, Hackney, London, 28 Nov 2007) Black colour with brief, pale brown head. Roasted nose with distinct notes of heavily roasted coffee and dark bitter chocolate. Roasted taste with freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate and soy sauce. Dry, with lots of coffee bitterness in the finish. Very nice stout.

Bottle- I remember having this beer a few years ago and not thinking too much of it but the bottle I had was sensational. Very dark in colour with a nice roasted aroma but also with some beautiful aromatic hops in there. The palate is subtle and not overwhelming but is delicious and superbly balanced. Coffee and roasted malts in the taste and very easy to drink. A superb brew.

Pitch black with brown fast disappearing head. Roasted aroma - chocolate mainly with notes of coffee/caramel. Thin body. Roast bitter cofeee and a bitter end. Besides the watery body very decent and nice stout!

Bottle at home ....Deep black with a small foam head, rich coffee malt, full roast moving to bitterness, little smokeness.... cask at cloisters .... deer red black .... thin tan head .... soft chocolate front with reasonablebitterness ... thin ... bitter linger ... not up to much. stick to 3.1

Bottle. Dark brown to black color with a average frothy good lacing mostly lasting light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, burnt, dark chocolate, strong coffe. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft.

500ml bottle. Consumed after more than nine months in the cellar - bought at the great St. Albans Beer Festival in late September 2005. Medium lived off-white head containing fragile bubbles. Almost black in colour. Plentiful rich aroma of dark chocolate and cocoa. Taste a bit like cold coffee in a medium bittersweet palate. Burnt malty finish.

05-05-06 Bottle picked up at Sainsburys. Itโs easy to see why this has picked up champion bottled beer of britain as it proclaims to have done twice on its label. A very good stout that as I can recall differs little from itโs cask brother wonderful woody flavour and nice roastiness, perhaps a bit on the dry side for me a maybe a bit thin but thats just my preferences, there is no denying from this is really good.
