2 red and seasonal products. Beetroot brings deep and earthy notes while blood orange invigorates the aromas with its citrus notes. A rather unique balance!

20/VII/21 - 33cl can from the brewery (webshop), shared @ home, BB: 12/V/21 (ooops!) (2021-650)

Clear bright red to reddish orange beer, huge fizzy light pinkish head, irregular, big bubbled, falls down quickly, lots of chunks at the bottom of the can. Aroma: lots of beetroot all right, acidic impression, fruity, very earthy, intense smell, good! MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: very earthy, lots of beetroot, refreshing acidity, citrus, grapefruit, oranges, pretty bitter as well. Aftertaste: gentle acidity, very earthy, lots of beetroot, pretty bitter and dry finish, refreshing, blood orange, nice!

Can. Pours a lovely pink with almost no head. Aroma is earthy, sour with balsamic vinegar notes. Full on beetroot, but basically no blood orange. Light body. Flavour is slightly acidic, earthy, loads of beetroot. A weird beer, almost no orange but loads of beetroot. I kind of enjoy it.

One of La Source's sour variations, with beetroot and blood orange, a rather unlikely combination indeed; in line with the ornithological theme running through this fascinating brewery's beers, probably named after the northern cardinal, a vibrantly red coloured bird (the males at least) from eastern North America. Comes from a can filled to the brim - difficult to open without loss simply because it is so full of beer... Thin, open, pale pinkish white 'ring' of a head dissolving over a cloudy, pinkish fuchsia-tinged deep red beer, turning into a tomato juice-like milkiness with sediment. Aroma of lemon flesh and indeed blood orange, sour cream, purple gooseberries, beetroot but in a 'juicy' and glazed way rather than an earthy way, fresh clay, pumice, radish, tomatoes first cooked and then frozen, garden tulips, vague red raspberry even if it is not used, something sweaty and musty in the background. Sour onset but not in a puckering way, lime juice-ish with clear blood orange sourness and sharpness but also sweetness, raw rhubarb and sour apple accents, minerally side notes paired with lively, yet fine-tingling carb; slender, light, soft mouthfeel, a thin cereally malt base deliberately made subordinate to the two 'red ingredients', with the citrusiness of the blood orange remaining sufficiently subdued so as not to interrupt the smooth, 'glazed carrot'-ish rotundity of the beetroot - with just that volatile touch of earthiness to it without actually becoming earthy. Refreshing finish, some low hoppiness hidden in the background, lingering minerality and lime-like zestiness accentuated by the blood orange - and this beetroot flavour, which remains clean and rounded, and in that sense even a bit hard to pin down. I thought the beetroot would remain very subservient to the blood orange (which I associate with much more vibrant and crisp flavours than beetroot) but La Source somehow managed to get the balance just right, so that both elements can have their say in equal proportions. Interesting construction built on an altogether simple kettle sour, but the whole thing works, in being surprising, different, refreshing and quaffable.

33cl can, BB12/05/2021, lot# P198.
