Put to the people’s choice, we asked you what flavour combination you'd like to see in an updated version of our Classic range porter. With a landslide victory, Britain’s love of biscuits prevailed, and the second iteration of Northern Star is a decadent chocolate, caramel and biscuit porter.

330ml can. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a lasting frothy off-white head. The aroma is roasty malt, big caramel, light chocolate. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a smooth, rich, slightly oily, sweet chocolate caramel, liqourice bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Taster. Pitch black, medium beige head, quite lasting. Very nice nose, dessert quality, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, some vanilla. Medium sweetness, medium bitterness, slight currant. A bit roasted in the finish. Medium lighter body. Nice.

Dark, dark brown with a tall, frothy head. An artificial berry aroma greets the nose. There’s something genuinely pleasant just underneath—caramel and rich biscuits—but the awful, cloying pop-like “berries” on top make naught of that. Taste is sweet, the lactose noticeable. Finishes the same, perhaps a touch cloying, but manageable. Medium bodied, moderate to mild carbonation. Good chewiness. Flawed. One of these is drinkable. Would not want them on a regular basis.

440ml can. Almost black, big beige head. Aroma of sweet chocolate and caramel, malts. Taste is sweet, chocolatey, caramel, biscuit - does what it says on the tin, light roasty bitterness. Light-medium bodied. The chocolate, caramel and biscuit flavours are all spot on, and it’s not too sweet either. Decent supermarket fodder.
