Bottle. Hazy deep ruby. Sour cherries, wheat, fresh oak, almonds. It’s a bit thick wheaty, fruity but not overpowering, solid medium sour but also a light sweetness. Soft carbonation. Not bad at all, but also not super complex.

0.375 l bottle from 'Het Huis van de Geuze', bottled in February 2021. Hazy, ruby with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, pinkish white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, rather fruity and a little funky aroma of sour cherry, elderberry, red grapes and some oak. Slightly sweet, moderately sour, quite fruity and a bit funky taste of sour cherry, elderberry, some oak and hints of vinegar, followed by a short, gently tart, moderately woody-dry finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Reasonable Kriek, but quite simple. Still quite pleasant and refreshing.

Zythos 2022. Dark red colour with no head. Red fruits and a little bit of cherry stone. Very dry finish. Not a Kriek fan but this is good.

Poured as if roping, devoid of any head; deep cardinal red beer. Coffee (???), Sachertorte, cherry cream, full carpet and finish is fruity/cherry. Sour cherries, juice-like, not much lambic character. In combination with food, the cherry flavour gets suddenly more intense, but hardly any of the classic farmyard/horseblanket vectors. Light, acidthinning and (light) acidburn; undercarbonated. If I read the label right, it ought NOT to be called Oude Kriek following the registered European rules, as the weighted average of the lambics is too low. But it is quite allright tastewise. Thanks to Stef!

22/I/22 - 37.5cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte), shared @ home, BB: 4/VI/30, bottled: 4/VI/20 (2022-94)

Clear deep bright ruby red beer, small creamy pinkish white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: little funky, fruity notes, some cherries, pretty faint... MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty sour, little fruity, some sour cherries, bitter touch, some tannins. Aftertaste: sourish, dry, wood notes, cherry pits, fruity, very acidic. Not very fruity, rather faint cherry notes, lacking depth and complexity, despite the bitter finish.

Pours dark purplered. Small pink head. Scent is swiming pool, wet cherries, fleshy, fairly intense. Taste is stronger sour than the gueuze prematuurke , but not unbalanced. Very fruitforward. intense emphasis on the cherries, without loosing touch with the lambic. Dry, but not bonedry. Citric acidity, lactic acidity. low to no acetic acid. Very nice, very intense. What more can you hope for ?

The long-awaited resurrection of the old Eylenbosch lambic brand (deceased in 1991) has finally materialized in the first two new Eylenbosch products: this traditional ‘kriek’ (sour cherry lambic) and a ‘prelude’ to the traditional geuze, both still in limited quantities, but larger volumes will be produced, bottled and marketed later this year. The lambic was brewed in De Troch’s installation in Wambeek by one of the owners of the new Eylenbosch brand (Klaas Vanderpoorten) and conditioned in Eylenbosch’ own barrels; for this kriek version, 400 g of Belgian-grown sour cherries were added to the lambic and macerated for six months. The resulting cherry lambic, completely made according to the traditional methods (no use of cherry juice or other shortcuts), was bottled in June 2020. Now, seven months later, I was finally able to have a taste, from one of the relatively scarce bottles that made it to the market so far – not counting the ones that were included in the crowdfunding project Eylenbosch had started to help fund this whole project. A thin, open, pale pink ‘ring’ of foam forms during pouring, together with some flat pinkish ‘islands’ in the middle; cloudy, beautifully deep ruby red robe with dark-fuchsia shade. Aroma of lots and lots of ripe cherries and sour cherry juice, that typical ‘bitter green plant’ aspect I always get from De Troch lambic, wet towels, blackberry jam, cooked plum, stale sweat, lemon juice, subtler hints of beetroot juice earthiness, red wine vinegar, almond. Fruity, bright sourness in the onset but relatively mildly so, tempered by generous ripe cherry fleshiness; a lime-like sour edge provides a bit of edginess, but the overall acidity never becomes overly harsh or burning. Softly tingling carbonation, supple and smooth core, a wheaty breadiness deeply soaked in juicy sour ‘cherriness’ continuing all the way through, reinforced by a deeper stretch of yoghurty, lactic sourness and light tannic notes in the end from the cherry pits. Remains juicy, soft and very fruity throughout, while ‘Bretty’ funkiness remains quite limited (something which may well change as the bottles mature) – in other words, a proportionally ‘young’ and supple, mild, easily drinkable but otherwise completely ‘truthful’ and credible ‘oude kriek’, ticking all the boxes. Better than anticipated, to be frank – looking forward to that geuze now, even if it is only the ‘premature’ version for the time being.
