Bottle from local Tesco. Not much of a nose really – just generally malty with a hint of rotting fruit. Pours the classic bitter brown with a small and transient off-white head. In the mouth it’s mainly sweet malts at first, with traces of caramel. Later on some hops come through and linger in the finish. It’s a standard bitter really, but quite tasty for its strength.

At a tasting, small stable bubbly head, clear dark red to brown color, aroma of wood , mineral, caramel and honey, flavor of caramel, brown bread, whiff of honey, light bitterness/ Drinkable but would be much better from cask.

Cask @ Nags Head, Belgravia, drunk outside in the sun. Pours a misty brown, some scant bubbles atop. Aroma nears a very distant malt sweetness. Taste is quite gentle with a very light malt base, marginal caramel. Bit watery. Never destined to be a classic bitter.

Cask at the Counting House. A bog standard light English ale. Nothing to celebrate

Hand-pulled half-pint in The Wig & Mitre, Lincoln on 24th Nov 2017. Pale amber pour, wispy head. Malty front in aroma and flavour with a slight fruity undertone. A basic Bitter with just about enough going on. Subtle rather than bland in nature. Actually preferred the bottle according to my scoring!

On tap: half pint at Nag’s Head, London. Pours honey to amber coloured. Clean, no CO2 visible. Tan head vanishes in a blink. Aroma is sweat, dirty leather, rancid, grass, iron, bitter herbs. Mouth is watery, light, no carb. Quite long finish with nice bitterness and hints of bitter herbs (this finish comes to the rescue in the last minute.) Quite poor, even drunk at such a fantastic venue as Nag’s Head on a sunny day.
