Recreated using a Californian yeast strain, pale ale malted barley, along with some Munich malt, Crystal malt and malted wheat. This will provide the biscuity backdrop to the big American hops. A blend of five American hops gives our beer a deep citrus bitterness with a fragrant citrus/floral aroma.

Cask at the Argyll Arms, Nicholson’s, London. Pours a clear, bright gold with a creamy, white cap. Toast, light ripe fruits and caramel in the aroma. Tangy fruit flavor, bit more caramel and toasted malts. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet, light sticky sugar finish, some brown sugar, toast and still some caramel to be had. OK.

Bottle from M & S food store, Farringdon, London. This was labelled as ’Southwold Summer IPA’ it was 6.8% alc. An amber/gold coloured pour with a medium off white head. Hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, sweet, malty, citrus fruit, tropical fruit. Very well balanced and so drinkable. Hard to believe I could be impressed with an M & S beer.

Bottle from M&S at St Pancras station. 6.8%abv. Having had the Winter version a couple of times it is the Innovation. Not sure this is the American ipa on cask though as this is so much stronger. Decent hoppy aroma. Funnily enough i thought this was quite earthy so more like an english hop. The earthyness i guess is from cascades. Decent enough. Bit obvious on the abv. Ok

Bottle 6.8% had this version labelled as Marks & Spencer Southwold Summer IPA 10th & 12th June 2011. Pours amber, good clarity with clean white head. Better citrus rush than I was expecting, soft in mouth, not as clean or crisp as some, but its not bad and isn’t sweet or over the top. I think this would surprise some in a blind tasting, its no world beater but that said it ain’t bad at all. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Cask at the Plough & Harrow (JDW), Hammersmith. Copper with a thin cream head leaving lots of lacing; big aroma of American hops; thick and resinous in the mouth with a flavour of bitter orange marmalade; then a deep dry bitter finish. I really enjoyed this.
