One of New Zealand’s first new generation pale ales and now something of a classic, Emerson’s 1812 is all about balance. Pouring a bright amber hue beneath a deep cream coloured head, the aroma hints at caramel and dark toffee balanced with a light citrusy fruitiness.
Medium bodied, the palate first offers a
marmalade-like combination of ripe citrus and caramelised malts before resiny hops come to the fore and lead into a lingering dry finish.

Light golden colour. The aroma is light and somewhat mushroomy. Light palate with caramel accents. A little bit bland.

Bottle. Copper, small light beige head with some lacing. Toast, seville oranges and grass nose. Medium-bodied, very slightly oily. Insistent spicy bitterness at the finish. Not terribly complex, but nicely balanced. Just enough alcohol and hops for the journey - IPAs don’t have to be an attempted mugging.

Pours golden amber with a ridiculously huge soap-suddy head.Aroma shows lots of floral and grassy hops, along with juicy pears and grapes. There’s some sweet clean malt, and later on the aroma takes on more of a herbal note, with coriander and cloves. Different to any other IPA I’ve had!Flavours include some floral hops and juicy fruit, with some light sweet malt and a prominent but easy-going bitterness. Unfortunately there’s a soapy taste in there that quite off-putting after a few sips.Moderately high carbonation and a light body makes for quite a refreshing brew.Very easy to drink. If fact I wouldn’t even say this is of IPA strength.

500ml bottle from Phil_L. Copper colour with thick beige head. Decent hop/malt aroma. Oddish IPA. Melon fruit. Over carbonated, odd hop, rich melon tropical fruit. Hop is a bit unbalanced, bit syrupy on malts. Just a bit odd. Nice melon/tangerine/passionfruit, but odd sickly flavour and not a great aroma lets it down. Vegetal aroma.

(Bottle 50 cl) Hazy amber with a small, but collapsing, beige head. Heavy carbonation. Hoppy nose. Rather light body with a touch of caramel malt. Quite dry and dominated by the aroma hops also leaving some bitterness. Very accessible IPA, but not overly thrilling. 121105

Bottled. Hazily amber, rich, firm head. Rich grapefruity hop aroma. Sweet and firmly malty with rounded mouthfeel. Very aromatic with notes of curacao and flowers as well as caramel. Medium bitterness. Excellent!

Bottle. Aroma has some flowery fruitiness. Some skub-op-is, lime? Cloudy dark copper colour. Small white head. Aromatic hoppiness in flavour, some maltiness. Dusty aftertaste.

An unclear orange beer with a nice orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coriander - like a Wit bier?!? The flavor is sweet and rather hoppy, but also quite spicy - with coriander standing out. The end is dry. Quite weird - a hoppy belgian ale? or is it because it was 6 months old or so, though still within the best before date.
