Brewed by Marston's, in collaboration with Shipyard Brewing Co. Initially in 2010, as a special (Revisionist American Pale Ale), then as a regular from May 2013, in an extension of the breweries' 15-year pan-Atlantic collaboration. Shipyard started brewing their own version, following Marston's recipe, in 2014.
Dry hopped with real American hop varieties that deliver a refreshing, easy drinking true American pale ale. Take a moment to enjoy!
Shipyard American Pale Ale is a versatile beer style that actually makes a perfect partner to most meals. Citrus flavours work perfectly to complement rich grilled or BBQ meats, spiced foods, fajitas or chilli’s and also some bold cheeses too. The fruity character also means that our American Pale Ale is equally at home paring with more delicate flavour seafoods like lobster or crab. Brewed and packaged in the UK.

On tap @ the Craft Beer Rising event at the Drygate brewery. This was a fairly restrained pale ale compared to most North American versions. There were gentle herb and citrus aromas and the citrus (probably lemon going into grapefruit) was evident on the palate. However, it was gentle and very balanced.

Bottle thanks to Kenny split at GBBF ’14, day 1, 12/08/14. Clear golden with a moderate white covering that dissipates to the edge. Nose is pale malts, citric zip, orange pith, toasty ring, straw. Taste comprises floral notes, lemon zest, orange squash, bready notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light hop bitterness. Inoffensive drinkable stuff but a low level APA - lacks Hops’n’Trops (TM).

GBBF Day 2. Bottle. Clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, dry and crispy. Mild minerals. Light dry malts, clean. Reasonably fresh orange and tangerine. Light floral things. Whisper of lemon. Dry finish. Not bad, pretty drinkable.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Keg. Clear gold beer with a tidy white head. Palate is crisp and very very dry. Minerals. Bone dry pale malt with no obvious hops here. Actually after battling through most of a pint of this there is a tiny bit of floral hop skunk. Very dry finish. This is rubbish. Very disappointed.

Bottle from Gbbf 2014 and drunk on a train. Clear gold colour lasting white head. Some diacetyl on aroma. Drinkable enough in the mouth. Some citrus hoppy bitterness on the finish apart from the aroma it’s fine.

O tap at The Pheasant Ashford. Clear gold lasting white head. Some lemon sherbert hop on the aroma. A little thin in the mouth. But ok hop. An under powered apa. Funnily enough I preferred the Banks Bitter in the same pub

Tap@Yager Bar, London - golden pour with puffy white head. Pretty reserved/faint citrus notes to this, slight lemon maybe, grassy, served extremely cold, even when warmed still tasted very subdued. Pretty boring overall.

Keg @ A G Bell, Edinburgh [141013] as Shipyard Pale Ale 4.5%
Blonde, bit hazy, dense white head, good lacing
Aroma of mellow citrus , some grapefruit zest
Taste of soft citrus zest, light bit fruity sweet light caramel malt background - ok the backgroud base maybe a bit flat, grapefruit zest, some lemon, much more hoppy flavour comes thorough in the finish, simple zesty flavours
Palate - Medium body, quite oily, creamy texture. Finish as above with a good bitter zest tail
Overall - Easy drinking, quite creamy, better than expected
