Gold Rush is the first Transatlantic cider-making collaboration between Tom Oliver of Oliver’s Cider & Perry, Herefordshire and Greg Hall of Virtue Cider, Chicago. Using skills and crafts refined through the centuries, this fine cider is made with unsprayed cider apples from local and traditional orchards. Fresh pressed juice is fermented by wild yeasts and then matured and aged in oak barrels. A true reflection of the cidermakers art.

On tap at Anxo, pours a muddy orange with a ring of white head. Nose is absolutely delicious, sweet apples, earthy too, some yeast, a little turbinado sugar. Flavor follows, apples, apple juice, earthy apple cores, lightly sweet, a little orange maybe too. Mostly dry, earthy finish. Absolutely delicious and crazy drinkable.

Cask at Cider Tap. It pours cloudy rich amber with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma is rich, earthy, funky, must apple pie and vanilla ice cream. The taste is rich, boosty alcohol, sweet apple pie, light vanilla, wood, damp leaves, earthy funk and a touch of acidity. Medium body and a hint of carbonation. A bit chewy perhaps, but it has a good depth of flavour and balance. A quality cider.

330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Kaapse Brouwers 1st Anniversary Beer Festival”. Darker shade of golden. Lightly rustic bitter apple in the nose with light sulfite. Taste is bitter sulfite, bitter apple peal, light rustic, light chemical-like taste, sweet apple,… Rather substantial body. Not ideal but agreeable.

Bottle poured into a shaker. Zero head. Pours a dark gold with an orange hue. Aroma is mostly tart, with some vinegar and a hint of sweet red apple. Taste follows aroma. Loads of hay, straw and barnyard funk. Very good, much better than I was expecting.

Cask / Bag in a Box @ Euston Cider Tap. Fairly dry one this, with plenty of tannins, nice and rough around the edges with a nice farmhouse feel and a little straw here & there. Bit too acidic, although the oak balances that out. Wouldn’t mind trying a bottle of this.

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has notes of sweet green apple with a strong oak, funky cheese and tannin backing. Flavor has sweet green apple up front with a bit of funky cheese with an oaky backing and tannins/smoked oak.
