Our largest hop bill goes into making this intense and rich beer; our EIP turned up to 11. The dry hop brightens the heavy roast flavours, and the bitterness stays with you well after you have finished sipping.

Excellent cocoa jet black body but modest dark beige foam. Really good smack in the face aroma of vanilla, white wine, molasses and dirty motor oil. Taste is chewy fruity molasses, licorice in red wine, finishing smooth and dry. Divine.

(Keg at Pien Brewpub, 20201021) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized, lightly brown and it lasted long. Aroma had burnt malts, dark chocolate, resin, liquorice and pine. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, dark chocolate, resin, ash, liquorice and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A pleasant burnt brew with nice hop notes but the finish was bit too ashy.

Bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Dark, chocolate brown. Thick, super dense, lasting, leggy beige head. Looks the absolute beans. Nose has scorched grapefruit. Marmalade. Sticky pine. Mint toffee. Chocolate covered vine fruit. Taste has a rich chocolate bitterness, with oily resin, and a touch of cocoa sweetness. Smooth and silky on the palate. Fine carbonation. Touch of dryness. Lingering, chocolate orange finish.

4th April 2020 Opaque dark brown beer, decent tan head. Smooth palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Rich dark malts, some dark malt cream, smooth. Touch of coffee and mellow dark chocolate. Typical Kernel dark malts earthyness. Hops shine through on this one. A obvious orangey citrus. A trace of chocolate - orange where it intersects with the malts. Soft and fairly luxuriant finish leaves a modest bitter linger. Very nice. A Hedy Lamarr of porters, dark, beautiful and has wonderful legs.

Black beer, frothy dark brown head. Smell is rich, toasty malt with a zesty air to it too. Flavour has the same two qualities, with sharp grassy, grapefruity hop cutting through thick toasty malt, dark chocolate and liquorice and balancing all that into a lingering aftertaste. The Kernel are really very good at this sort of thing.

Bottke from Westhill Service Station. It pours opaque black with a thick, fluffy tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, charry, ashy, unctuous, bright fresh pine, dark chocolate, cookie dough, chocolate orange and liquorice. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, salted dark chocolate, toasty, toothy, cookie dough, berries, dark fruits, charred and ashy, chocolate orange, some jam, pine and some peppery spice with a toothy and lingering bitter finish. Medium to full body. Flavourful and moreish. Crazy tasty stuff. Love it.
